CHAPTER ONE

Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To ascertain the effect of population growth on enrolment and acquisition of secondary school of geography education
  2. To ascertain the effect of population growth enrolment in secondary school and academic performance of student on geography
  3. To ascertain the effect of population growth enrolment of secondary school on quality education

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

Enrolmentย  ratesย  andย  yearsย  ofย  schoolingย  haveย  risenย  inย  mostย  countriesย  ofย  theย  worldย  andย  thisย  canย  be attributedย  toย  successiveย  generationsย  ofย  parentalย  investmentย  inย  childrenโ€Ÿsย  educationย  withinย  theย  confineย  of aย  stableย  householdย  structure.ย  Overtime,ย  theseย  investmentsย  haveย  narrowedย  theย  differencesย  inย  schooling across and withinย  countries,ย  and between and withinย  genders. Inย  1960,ย  theย  averageย  schoolingย  ofย  menย  agedย  25ย  andย  over inย  advanced countriesย  wereย  5.8 times that of menย  inย  developingย  countries.ย  Inย  2000,ย  thisย  ratioย  fellย  toย  2.4.ย  Duringย  theย  sameย  period,ย  womenโ€Ÿsย  average schoolingย  levelย  asย  aย  ratioย  ofย  menโ€Ÿsย  increasedย  fromย  0.5ย  toย  0.7ย  inย  developingย  countries.ย  Inย  Nigeria, availableย  evidenceย  hasย  shownย  thatย  enrolmentย  growthย  ratesย  areย  quiteย  insignificantย  andย  inconsistent. Specifically,ย  theย  profileย  ofย  primaryย  educationย  inย  Nigeriaย  betweenย  1980ย  andย  2010ย  presentsย  aย  gloomy pictureย  asย  theย  growthย  inย  primaryย  schoolย  enrolmentย  hasย  followedย  anย  inconsistentย  andย  haphazardย  pattern. Theย  growthย  rateย  ofย  primaryย  schoolย  enrolmentย  wasย  5.04 percentย  in 1983,ย  when theย  enrolmentย  figure was 15,308,384ย  pupils,ย  reducedย  to -10.64ย  percentย  in 1987ย  when enrolment was11, 540,178 ย pupils and later increasedย  toย  7.47percentย  inย  1992.ย  Highestย  growthย  rateย  wasย  registeredย  inย  1996ย  withย  14.31ย  percent followedย  byย  1997ย  and2002ย  whenย  itย  wasย  bothย  10.00ย  percentย  andย  subsequently fellย  toย  -16.98ย  percent in 2004.itย  slightly increasedย  to almostย  13 percentย  in 2009ย  beforeย  later declining to 8.334 percent in 2010. It isย  howeverย  dishearteningย  toย  observeย  thatย  betweenย  1980ย  andย  2010,ย  theย  growthย  ratesย  ofย  primaryย  school enrolmentย  isย  lessย  thanย  15 percent.ย  It should beย  noted that inย  spiteย  ofย  various policy interventions initiated byย  theย  governmentย  overย  theย  yearsย  toย  stimulateย  schoolingย  atย  allย  levelsย  ofย  education,ย  enrolmentย  ratesย  of school-agedย  childrenย  stillย  remainย  abysmallyย  poor.ย  Hence,ย  thereย  isย  urgentย  needย  toย  investigateย  theย  various factorsย  thatย  areย  militatingย  againstย  primaryย  schoolย  enrolmentย  inย  Nigeriaย  consideringย  theย  crucialย  roleย  it playsย  inย  theย  educationalย  developmentย  ofย  aย  child.ย  Apartย  fromย  this,ย  thereย  isย  ampleย  documentaryย  evidence onย  theย  impactย  ofย  education;ย  generally,ย  onย  economicย  growthย  butย  theย  impactย  ofย  primaryย  enrolmentย  isย  still very nascent (Babatunde,ย  Olukayode 2013).ย  Overย  theย  lastย  decade,ย  Nigeriaโ€Ÿsย  exponentialย  growthย  inย  populationย  hasย  putย  immenseย  pressureย  onย  the country’sย  resourcesย  andย  onย  alreadyย  overstretchedย  publicย  servicesย  andย  infrastructure.ย  Withย  childrenย  less thanย  15ย  yearsย  ofย  ageย  accountingย  forย  about,ย  45ย  perย  centย  ofย  theย  countryโ€Ÿs ย population,ย  theย  burdenย  on educationย  andย  other sectors has become overwhelming.ย  Fortyย  percentย  ofย  Nigerian children aged 6-11ย  do notย  attendย  anyย  primaryย  schoolย  withย  theย  Northernย  regionย  recordingย  theย  lowestย  schoolย  attendanceย  rateย  in theย  country,ย  particularlyย  forย  girls.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to population growth effect on enrollment and acquisition of senior secondary School geography education

Sources of data collection

Data were collected from two main sources namely:

Primary source:ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย 

These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.

Secondary source:

These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.

Population of the study

Population of a study is a group of persons or aggregate items, things the researcher is interested in getting information population growth effect on enrollment and acquisition of senior secondary School geography education. 200 staff of selected secondary school in Uyo was selected randomly by the researcher as the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Introduction

Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey.ย  This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data collected from the respondents were analyzed in tabular form with simple percentage for easy understanding.

A total of 133(one hundred and thirty three) questionnaires were distributed and 133 questionnaires were returned.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to examine population growth effect on enrollment and acquisition of senior secondary School geography education. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of population growth effect on enrollment and acquisition of senior secondary School geography education

Summary

This study was on population growth effect on enrollment and acquisition of senior secondary School geography education. Three objectives were raised which included: To ascertain the effect of population growth on enrolment and acquisition of secondary school of geography education, to ascertain the effect of population growth enrolment in secondary school and academic performance of student on geography and to ascertain the effect of population growth enrolment of secondary school on quality education. The total population for the study is 200 staff selected secondary schools in Uyo. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made principals, vice principals adm, senior staff and nonacademic staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

Weย  haveย  examinedย  populationย  growthย  sideย  byย  sideย  withย  theย  enrolmentย  ofย  secondary schoolย  Uyo local government of Akwa Ibom state.ย  It wasย  observedย  thatย  theย  enrolment rate was very slow as compared to the populationย  growth

Recommendation

It is well shared that increment in student population growth suffers quality in education. Hence, the management in the school, the ministry and school officials shall restrict the number of students in a class and decision makers shall admit the students based on their resource capacity so that the students could get quality education.
