The research methodology was anchored in a quantitative survey research design, a strategic choice aligned with the study’s objectives and the imperative for systematic data collection (Saunders et al., 2019). This approach was deemed instrumental in providing a structured framework for gathering numerical insights, a critical component in analyzing the multifaceted impact of Point of Sale (POS) businesses on unemployment dynamics in the Dutsin-ma metropolis.

The selection of this specific population was deliberate, as it represents the demographic directly impacted by the operational dynamics of point-of-sale (POS) businesses within the local economy (Saunders et al., 2016).

By focusing on residents and business owners, the study aimed to capture a comprehensive understanding of the diverse perspectives and experiences related to POS businesses and their influence on both the economic landscape and employment patterns in the Dutsin-ma metropolis. This targeted approach to population selection aligns with the principles of precision and relevance in research design (Saunders et al., 2016).

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The study delved into the intricate relationship between Point of Sale (POS) businesses and unemployment challenges in the Dutsin-ma metropolis, Nigeria. By employing a quantitative survey research design and collecting primary data through structured questionnaires, the research aimed to uncover the impact of POS businesses on employment opportunities, skills development, and the overall unemployment rate in the community. The study included 104 valid responses from residents and business owners, offering valuable insights into the perceptions and experiences of the local population.

Employment Opportunities Created by POS Businesses: The analysis of Table 4.5 revealed that a substantial portion of respondents acknowledged the significant contribution of POS businesses to the creation of employment opportunities in the Dutsin-ma metropolis. With 67.3% agreeing or strongly agreeing, it is evident that the growth and expansion of POS services positively affect the local job market. Furthermore, Table 4.6 reinforced this sentiment, highlighting that the expansion of POS services has led to an increase in job opportunities, with 73.1% of respondents agreeing. The findings collectively indicate a positive correlation between the presence of POS businesses and the generation of employment opportunities, aligning with the broader goal of addressing unemployment challenges.

Skills Development and Training Initiatives: Tables 4.9 to 4.12 delved into the role of POS businesses in skills development and training initiatives. The majority of respondents agreed that POS businesses actively engage in providing training programs (67.3% – Table 4.9) and that these initiatives significantly contribute to skill development (76.9% – Table 4.10). Moreover, respondents emphasized the role of POS businesses in bridging the skills gap (70.2% – Table 4.11) and ensuring that employees receive effective training programs (71.2% – Table 4.12). These findings underscore the multifaceted impact of POS businesses, not only as employment generators but also as contributors to the enhancement of the local workforce’s skill set.

Overall Impact on Unemployment Rate: Tables 4.13 to 4.16 provided valuable insights into respondents’ perceptions regarding the broader impact of POS businesses on the unemployment rate in the Dutsin-ma metropolis. The overwhelming agreement (84.6% – Table 4.13) that POS businesses have substantially contributed to reducing the unemployment rate reinforces the positive image of these establishments. Similarly, respondents recognized the positive effect of the growth of POS services on mitigating unemployment challenges (78.8% – Table 4.14) and viewed POS businesses as key drivers in creating a more diversified job market (79.8% – Table 4.15). The consensus among respondents (81.7% – Table 4.16) that the overall impact of POS businesses on unemployment is positive and substantial further solidifies the perceived significance of these businesses in addressing unemployment challenges.

Statistical Analysis and Hypothesis Testing: The one-sample t-test, as indicated in Table 4.17, provided statistical insights into the hypotheses related to the impact of POS businesses. The results showed that the mean values for all three variables were significantly different from the assumed mean of 0, with p-values less than 0.05. This indicates that POS businesses have a statistically significant positive impact on reducing unemployment, contributing to skills development, and influencing the overall unemployment rate in the Dutsin-ma metropolis. Therefore, the null hypotheses were rejected, supporting the notion that POS businesses play a crucial role in addressing unemployment challenges.

In summary, the findings of this study underscore the positive relationship between POS businesses and various aspects of unemployment mitigation in the Dutsin-ma metropolis. From creating employment opportunities to contributing to skills development and training initiatives, POS businesses emerged as multifaceted contributors to the local economy. The statistical analysis further supported these findings, highlighting the significance of POS businesses in positively influencing the unemployment landscape in the community. The study not only contributes to the academic understanding of the subject but also provides practical insights for policymakers, business owners, and community leaders aiming to foster economic development and address unemployment challenges.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the findings of the hypothesis testing provide compelling evidence that Point of Sale (POS) businesses have a substantial and statistically significant positive impact on addressing unemployment challenges in the Dutsin-ma metropolis. The rejection of the null hypotheses in all three tested variables—employment opportunities creation, skills development and training, and the overall impact on the unemployment rate—underscores the influential role of POS businesses in the local economy.

The statistically significant mean values obtained through the one-sample t-test suggest that the positive perceptions expressed by respondents are not merely subjective opinions but are rooted in tangible impacts. The community’s consensus on the positive contributions of POS businesses aligns with the broader discourse on the evolving role of technology-driven enterprises in fostering economic development and addressing socio-economic challenges.

This study’s results have practical implications for local policymakers, business owners, and community leaders seeking effective strategies to alleviate unemployment. The demonstrated positive impact of POS businesses suggests that fostering an environment conducive to their growth could be a viable avenue for promoting job creation and skills development. As technology continues to play a pivotal role in economic progress, understanding and leveraging the contributions of businesses like POS establishments becomes crucial for shaping inclusive and sustainable development in local communities.

Recommendations

The following recommendations were proposed for this study:

  1. Supporting Infrastructure Development: Local authorities and stakeholders should prioritize the development and maintenance of robust technological infrastructure, including reliable electricity and internet connectivity. This is crucial for sustaining POS businesses and ensuring their uninterrupted operation, ultimately contributing to job creation.
  2. Enhancing Skills Development Programs: Collaborative efforts between POS businesses, educational institutions, and local governments can be established to design and implement comprehensive skills development programs. These initiatives should be tailored to the needs of the local workforce, focusing on relevant technological and business skills to enhance employability.
  3. Promoting Financial Literacy: To foster the growth of POS businesses and encourage financial inclusion, there should be targeted efforts to enhance financial literacy among residents. This can empower individuals to use electronic payment systems effectively, leading to increased transactions and the expansion of POS services.
  4. Government Incentives and Policies: Policymakers should explore the implementation of supportive policies and incentives for POS businesses. This may include tax breaks, grants, or subsidized training programs to encourage the growth of such enterprises, thereby amplifying their positive impact on employment.
  5. Collaborative Initiatives with Financial Institutions: Establishing partnerships between POS businesses and financial institutions can facilitate access to capital for entrepreneurs.
