CHAPTER ONE

Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of this study were:

  1. To examine the attitudes of secondary school headteachers in Ethiope West Local Government Area towards fundraising activities.
  2. To assess the behaviours of secondary school headteachers in Ethiope West Local Government Area regarding the procurement of supplies.
  3. To investigate the practices of secondary school headteachers in Ethiope West Local Government Area related to the staging of inter-house athletics events.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

Conceptual Review

Attitudes of Secondary School Headteachers

Positive attitudes among secondary school headteachers play a vital role in shaping the overall school environment and student outcomes (Gbinijie, 2021). These attitudes encompass a range of factors, including optimism, resilience, and a commitment to continuous improvement. Research by Gbinijie (2021) suggests that headteachers with positive attitudes are more likely to inspire and motivate their staff, foster a culture of collaboration, and create a supportive learning environment for students.

Furthermore, the attitude of secondary school headteachers towards fundraising significantly influences the financial resources available for educational programs and activities (Mugari & Masocha, 2021). Positive attitudes towards fundraising involve a proactive approach to engaging stakeholders, seeking out funding opportunities, and effectively managing resources. Headteachers who demonstrate enthusiasm and confidence in their fundraising efforts are better positioned to secure additional funding, implement innovative projects, and meet the diverse needs of students and staff.

Moreover, the attitudes of headteachers towards supply procurement impact the availability and quality of educational materials and resources within schools (Li et al., 2021). Positive attitudes towards procurement involve a commitment to transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the procurement process. Research by Li et al. (2021) suggests that headteachers with positive procurement attitudes are more likely to prioritize the procurement of essential supplies, negotiate favourable contracts with vendors, and ensure the equitable distribution of resources to classrooms and departments.

Additionally, positive attitudes towards the staging of inter-house athletics events contribute to the promotion of physical fitness, teamwork, and school spirit among students (Mars, 2021). Headteachers who value athletics as an integral part of the school experience are more likely to allocate resources, time, and support for organizing and facilitating these events. These behaviours encompass a range of actions and decisions related to school management, leadership, and interaction with stakeholders. Research by Armstrong and Henson (2019) suggests that headteachers who demonstrate proactive behaviours, such as effective communication, decision-making, and problem-solving, are better able to navigate challenges, inspire their staff, and foster a positive school culture.

Furthermore, the behaviours of secondary school headteachers in fundraising activities influence the success of fundraising initiatives and the availability of resources for educational programs (Fidelis, 2022). Proactive fundraising behaviours involve actively seeking out funding opportunities, building relationships with donors and sponsors, and effectively managing fundraising campaigns. Research by Fidelis (2022) indicates that headteachers who exhibit proactive fundraising behaviours are more successful in securing funding, mobilizing resources, and addressing the diverse needs of students and staff.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

This chapter outlines the methodology adopted to investigate the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of secondary school headteachers towards fundraising, supply procurement, and staging of inter-house athletics events in Ethiope West Local Government Area. The research design, population of the study, sampling technique and sample size, sources and method of data collection, method of data analysis, validity and reliability of the study, and ethical considerations are discussed in detail (Saunders et al., 2019; Bell, 2022).

Research Design

For this study, a quantitative survey research design was chosen. This design allows for the collection of numerical data that can be analyzed statistically to conclude. Given the objective of assessing the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of headteachers, a survey approach provides a structured method to gather data from a large sample efficiently. Additionally, a survey design enables the researcher to generalize findings to the broader population of secondary school headteachers in the Ethiope West Local Government Area (Easterby-Smith et al., 2018).

Population of the Study

The target population for this study comprised secondary school headteachers in Ethiope West Local Government Area. With a total of 171 secondary schools in the area, the headteachers constituted the primary stakeholders involved in school administration and decision-making processes. Therefore, focusing on this population ensured that the research outcomes would be relevant to the context under investigation (Bell et al., 2019).

Sampling Technique and Sample Size

A simple random sampling technique was adopted to select participants from the population. This method ensures that each headteacher in the population has an equal chance of being included in the sample, thereby enhancing the representativeness of the sample. The sample size of 120 was determined using the Taro Yamane sample size formula, considering the total population size and desired level of precision. This sample size was deemed sufficient to provide reliable insights into the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of headteachers (Charan & Biswas, 2019).

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

Data Presentation

The distribution of questionnaires revealed that 90.0% of the total 120 were returned and completed, demonstrating a high response rate and indicating significant participation from respondents. This suggests a positive engagement with the research objectives and questionnaire design. However, 10.0% of the questionnaires were not returned or completed, representing a potential source of non-response bias. While the high completion rate enhances the reliability and validity of the collected data, acknowledging the presence of non-respondents is essential for understanding the limitations and potential impact on the generalizability of the study findings.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The study investigated various aspects of secondary school management in the Ethiope West Local Government Area, focusing on the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of headteachers towards fundraising activities, supply procurement, and staging of inter-house athletics events. Through a comprehensive analysis of survey data, several key findings emerged, providing valuable insights into the challenges and dynamics of school management in the region.

Firstly, concerning fundraising activities, the majority of headteachers recognized the importance of fundraising for improving educational resources and facilities in their schools. They believed that fundraising contributed to creating a sense of community among staff, students, and parents. However, concerns were raised about the sustainability of fundraising efforts and the equitable distribution of resources obtained through fundraising activities across all departments in the school.

Secondly, in terms of supply procurement, headteachers indicated a proactive approach to procurement practices, such as seeking competitive bids from multiple suppliers and prioritizing long-term relationships with suppliers to ensure timely delivery and quality of supplies. Despite these efforts, challenges such as bureaucratic procedures and limited financial resources were identified, which influenced procurement behaviours and impacted the availability and quality of supplies in schools.

Lastly, regarding the staging of inter-house athletics events, headteachers demonstrated a strong commitment to ensuring adequate planning and coordination of events to maximize participation and enjoyment among students. They also emphasized the importance of promoting healthy competition and sportsmanship among students during these events. However, challenges such as limited funding and inadequate facilities were cited, which posed obstacles to the successful organization of athletics events and negatively influenced student participation and performance.

Overall, the findings highlight the complex and multifaceted nature of school management in Ethiope West Local Government Area, characterized by a mix of proactive practices and persistent challenges. While headteachers displayed dedication and resourcefulness in their efforts to enhance school operations and student experiences, systemic issues such as limited funding, bureaucratic procedures, and resource constraints continue to present significant barriers. Addressing these challenges will require collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, including policymakers, school administrators, and the community, to develop innovative solutions and create supportive environments conducive to effective school management and student success.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the findings from the hypotheses testing provide valuable insights into the relationships between key aspects of school management and their impact on school outcomes in Ethiope West Local Government Area. The results suggest that the attitudes of secondary school headteachers towards fundraising activities significantly influence the success of fundraising initiatives, highlighting the importance of cultivating positive attitudes towards fundraising efforts to enhance resource mobilization and support educational initiatives. Additionally, the study reveals that procurement practices play a crucial role in ensuring the availability and quality of supplies in schools, emphasizing the need for efficient procurement processes and strategies to overcome challenges such as bureaucratic procedures and limited financial resources. Furthermore, the findings indicate that effective practices employed by headteachers in staging inter-house athletics events positively influence student participation and performance, underscoring the importance of providing opportunities for student engagement and fostering a culture of sportsmanship within schools. Overall, these findings contribute to our understanding of school management practices and provide valuable insights for policymakers, school administrators, and other stakeholders in improving educational outcomes and student experiences in Ethiope West Local Government Area.

Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are proposed:

  1. Training and Capacity Building: Implement training programs for secondary school headteachers to enhance their skills and knowledge in fundraising strategies, procurement practices, and event management. This training should focus on improving financial management skills, understanding procurement regulations, and organizing successful inter-house athletics events.
  2. Strengthening Collaboration: Foster collaboration among stakeholders, including teachers, administrative staff, parents, and local communities, to support fundraising activities, streamline procurement processes, and organize inter-house athletics events effectively. Encourage open communication and engagement to harness collective efforts towards achieving common goals.
  3. Establishing Clear Guidelines: Develop clear guidelines and standard operating procedures for fundraising activities, procurement processes, and event management in secondary schools. Provide headteachers with comprehensive manuals and resources to facilitate adherence to best practices and ensure consistency in operations.
  4. Resource Allocation: Allocate sufficient financial resources to support fundraising initiatives and ensure equitable distribution of funds across all departments within schools. Prioritize investments in educational resources, infrastructure upgrades, and sports facilities to enhance the overall learning environment and student experiences.
  5. Continuous Monitoring and Evaluation: Implement a robust monitoring and evaluation system to assess the effectiveness of fundraising efforts, procurement practices, and event management strategies. Regularly review performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and take corrective actions to address challenges and enhance efficiency.
  6. Capacity Building for Stakeholders: Provide training and capacity-building opportunities for teachers, staff, and students involved in organizing inter-house athletics events. Equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge to plan, coordinate, and execute sports activities effectively, ensuring maximum participation and enjoyment.
  7. Infrastructure Development: Invest in the development and maintenance of sports facilities and infrastructure to support inter-house athletics events and promote physical activity among students. The findings of this study contribute significantly to the existing body of knowledge in several ways. Firstly, by exploring the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of secondary school headteachers towards fundraising, procurement, and event management, this research sheds light on the multifaceted challenges faced by educational administrators in Ethiope West Local Government Area. Understanding these challenges is crucial for developing targeted interventions and support mechanisms to enhance school management practices.

Secondly, this study provides valuable insights into the factors influencing the success of fundraising initiatives in secondary schools. By examining headteachers’ perceptions of fundraising activities and their implications for resource allocation and equity, the research highlights the need for transparent and accountable fundraising practices. These insights can inform policy development and capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening financial management practices in schools.

Thirdly, the findings offer important implications for procurement practices and supply management in secondary schools. By identifying common challenges such as bureaucratic procedures and limited financial resources, the study underscores the importance of streamlining procurement processes and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders. These insights can guide efforts to improve the efficiency, transparency, and cost-effectiveness of procurement practices in educational institutions.

Furthermore, this research contributes to the literature on event management in the context of secondary education. By examining the practices employed by headteachers in staging inter-house athletics events, the study highlights the importance of effective planning, coordination, and resource allocation. These findings can inform the development of guidelines and best practices for organizing sports events in schools, ultimately promoting student engagement and well-being.

Limitations of the Study

Despite the valuable insights gained from this study, several limitations must be acknowledged. Firstly, the research focused solely on secondary school headteachers in the Ethiope West Local Government Area, which may limit the generalizability of the findings to other geographical regions or educational contexts. Future studies could consider expanding the scope to include a more diverse sample of educational administrators across different regions to enhance the external validity of the findings.

Secondly, the study relied primarily on self-report data obtained through questionnaires, which may be susceptible to social desirability bias and response biases. Participants may have provided socially desirable responses or overestimated their adherence to best practices, leading to potential inaccuracies in the data. Incorporating complementary data collection methods such as interviews or observations could provide a more comprehensive understanding of the phenomena under investigation and enhance the validity of the findings. Addressing these limitations in future research endeavours can contribute to a more nuanced understanding of the attitudes, behaviours, and practices of secondary school headteachers towards fundraising, procurement, and event management.
