CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is to ascertain the impact of traffic congestion. The specific objectives are;

  1. To provide this missing link by way of making good attempt at identifying the factors which are responsible for traffic problems in farin gada road Jos north local government, geography planning
  2. To recommend ways of easing traffic congestion in farin gada road Jos north local government, geography planning
  3. To examine the major causes of road traffic congestion in farin gada road Jos north    local government , geography planning

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Theoretical Framework and Literature Review

 Graph Theory

Graph theory is concerned with the encoding and analysis of graphs, which consists of links and nodes. Network analysis and graph theory-based network indices are used for determining road connectivity. A link is an imaginary straight line representing a finite length of road, railway, or bus route. A node is an imaginary point where links intersect. It represents network intersections like junctions or bus stop. The graph theory-based concepts employ alpha (a), beta (b), and gamma (c) indices to determine road connectivity. The alpha index (α) measures the circuitry of a network, or the degree to which it provides alternative paths for travelling from one node to another. The beta index (β) reflects the complexity and completeness of a network, by expressing the ratio of links (edges) to nodes. The gamma index (ɤ) is a measure of the extent to which the nodes are connected, and is called connectivity. It yields the ratio between the links and nodes of a given network (Kansky, 1963). In general, the higher the values of these indices, the higher degree of circuitry, complexity, and connectivity.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to causes of traffic congestion along farin gada road Jos north local government, geography planning

Sources of data collection

Data were collected from two main sources namely:

Primary source:

These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.

Secondary source:

These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.

CHAPTER FOUR

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Introduction

Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey.  This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain causes of traffic congestion along farin gada road Jos north    local government, geography planning. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of causes of traffic congestion along farin gada road Jos north    local government, geography planning

Summary

This study was on causes of traffic congestion along farin gada road Jos north    local government, geography planning. Three objectives were raised which included: To provide this missing link by way of making good attempt at identifying the factors which are responsible for traffic problems in farin gada road Jos north local government, geography planning, to recommend ways of easing traffic congestion in farin gada road Jos north local government, geography planning and to examine the major causes of road traffic congestion in farin gada road Jos north    local government , geography planning. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 residents in farin gada road Jos north local government. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made civil servants, drivers, passengers and youths were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

Traffic problems along route ways in Nigerian cities cannot be adequately addressed without proper identification of the factors responsible for the problem. Identification of such factors will become the bedrock for the search for appropriate planning and management approaches that will eliminate traffic congestions in Nigerian cities. For this to take place it is advisable that Urban Transport Planning and Management Committee (UTPMC) be established in each state which will be vested with the responsibility of identifying holistically and empirically relevant factors which cause traffic bottlenecks in Nigerian cities. Such a committee will not only serve as a research bureau but should be empowered to implement their recommendations. Law enforcement is about the most important aspect of traffic control. Any defaulting driver must be spotted and punished either by fine, puncturing of tyres or charged to court and any dishonest traffic warden must be exposed and disciplined (Adedimila, 1981).

Recommendation

Traffic education is the conscious training of all road users, most especially the vehicle operators including the Keke-Napep operators in proper and lawful behaviour on public highways (Meyor, 1978). Traffic education should emphasize knowledge of road traffic laws and highway codes, comprehension of road signs and traffic signals, knowledge of one’s responsibilities when driving, respect for other road users, respect for traffic control officers and their directives, concern for the safety of all road users, proficiency in driving and the don’ts of driving and highway uses.
