CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVE OF HE STUDY

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To ascertain if family size influences enrolment of children in schools in Ahiazu Mbaise local government Area
  2. To investigate if family size affects students’ academic performance in Ahiazu Mbaise local government Area
  3. To ascertain whether family size affects child’s educational attainment in Ahiazu Mbaise local government Area

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Family Size

The empirical literature on the effects of family size on child outcomes generally supports a negative relationship between family size and child “quality” (usually education), even after controlling for socio-economic factors.9 However, few of these findings can be interpreted as causal; family size is endogenously chosen by parents and hence may be related to other unobservable parental characteristics that affect child outcomes. In addition to the issues of endogeneity, the literature suffers from significant data limitations. Typically the studies do not have large representative datasets and do not study outcomes of economic interest, such as completed education and earnings. Additionally, the absence of information on birth order often means that birth order effects are confounded with family size effects. While the literature is extensive, we discuss below some of the studies that attempt to deal with some or all of these problems. Rosenzweig and Wolpin [1980], Lee [2003], and Conley [2004] all attempt to use exogenous variation in family size to determine the causal relationship between family size and child “quality”. Rosenzweig and Wolpin [1980], using data from India, and Lee [2003], using data from Korea, examine the effect of increases in fertility induced by twin births and sex of the first child, respectively, on child quality. Rosenzweig and Wolpin find that increases in fertility decrease child quality, while Lee finds that, if anything, larger families result in more educational expenditures per child. However, in both cases the sample sizes are small (25 twin pairs for Rosenzweig and Wolpin, approximately 2000 families for Lee), the estimates imprecise, and any family size effect could be confounded by the omission of birth order controls.

Research methodology

Research Design

The research design adopted in this research work is the survey research design which involves the usage of self-designed questionnaire in the collection of data. Under the survey research design, primary data of this study will be collected from selected residents in Ahiazu Mbaise local government of Imo in order to determine the effect of family size on the educational achievements of children. The design was chosen because it enables the researcher to collect data without manipulation of any variables of interest in the study. The design also provides opportunity for equal chance of participation in the study for respondents.

Population of Study

The population of study is the census of all items or a subject that possess the characteristics or that have the knowledge of the phenomenon that is being studied (Asiaka, 1991). It also means the aggregate people from which the sample is to be drawn.

Population is sometimes referred to as the universe. The population of this research study will be Seventy-five (75) residents of Ahiazu Mbaise local government of Imo state

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter is about the analysis and presentation of data collected from the field through questionnaire. The analysis of the data with particular question immediately followed by the presentation of findings.

As mentioned in chapter three, 50 questionnaires were administered and 50 were retrieved and necessary analysis was carried out on them and presented as follows:

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain effect of family size on the educational achievements of children in Ahiazu mbaise local government Area. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of effect of family size on the educational achievements of children

Summary

This study was on effect of family size on the educational achievements of children in Ahiazu mbaise local government Area. Three objectives were raised which included: To ascertain if family size influences enrolment of children in schools in Ahiazu Mbaise local government Area, to investigate if family size affects students’ academic performance in Ahiazu Mbaise local government Area and to ascertain whether family size affects child’s educational attainment in Ahiazu Mbaise local government Area. The total population for the study is 75 selected residents of Ahiazu Mbaise local government of Imo state. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

 Conclusion

It was proven that, there was causal relationship between family size and child’s education. On the more popular argument for that stance is the suggestion that children in large families perform bad academically, tend to enroll later, repeat grades more often, and drop out of school earlier. The factors were mainly due to financial problem, parental attention, poor health and sibling position among others. However, there are other variables that influence the academic performance of students such as parents own level of education, low-income status, unemployment, intelligent quotient of the child, and the environment.

Recommendation

It is eminent to educate couple on family planning which can reduce number of children.

This issue really affects polygamous family; it is important to marry according financial ability so you can be able to carter for your family
