CHAPTER ONE

Objective of the study

The objectives of the study are;

  1. To ascertain the relationship between virtual learning and academic performance of student on chemistry
  2. To ascertain the challenges of virtual learning in secondary school
  3. To ascertain how effective is virtual learning in teaching of chemistry in secondary school

CHAPTER TWO 

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Introduction

A study done by Payne aims to explore the views of 1205 second year students of secondary schools, in the state of Wisconsin

–Madison of America, about the importance of using virtual laboratories in online learning. The study has shown that 53% of the sample rejected learning in this way, while 47% responded with acceptance.

The objective of Shih study is to strengthen the role of virtual laboratories in the educational process, by taking the views of the 1898 high school students from public schools in the state of Utah, U.S. It became clear from the results that 73% support this trend, and they believe that virtual laboratories are a new step toward distance learning to solve a large part of the suffering in some schools related to laboratory schedules or cost of raw materials.

The study of Carl] analyzed the views of 578 sciences teachers and 2012 students from secondary schools, Ohio, on the use of virtual laboratories in elearning. It became clear from the results that both teachers and students support the new experience, but they are not comfortable with their results, especially as they may not achieve the immediate objectives of the educational process.

Harry‟s study [6] compares distance education and traditional education in the faculties of community service mandates of Florida and Arizona. The selected sample was composed of 120 students, distributed into three groups, the control group and two experimental groups. The results show that 61% of the two experimental groups prefer to have distance learning.

The study of Crosson  was conducted on two groups, a control group and an experimental one. He studied the use of the Internet in the educational process, as an optional model, for the high and middle school education. The results indicate that 83% of the experimental group prefer homework via the Internet, which is a sign of attention given to education over the internet. From the mentioned researches we can conclude that using virtual laboratories in e-learning and in educational institutions, would improve the quality of education, if some obstacles could be overcome.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to the effectiveness of virtual learning on secondary school chemistry students acquisition of 21st century skill in covid-19 era.

Sources of data collection

Data were collected from two main sources namely:

(i)Primary source and

(ii)Secondary source

Primary source:                          

These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.

Secondary source:

These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.

CHAPTER FOUR

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA

Introduction               

Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey.  This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analysis.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data collected from the respondents were analyzed in tabular form with simple percentage for easy understanding.

A total of 133(one hundred and thirty three) questionnaires were distributed and 133 questionnaires were returned.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction                

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain effectiveness of virtual learning on secondary school chemistry students acquisition of 21st century skill in covid-19 era. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of virtual learning on secondary school chemistry students acquisition of 21st century skill in covid-19 era

Summary

This study was on effectiveness of virtual learning on secondary school chemistry students acquisition of 21st century skill in covid-19 era. Four objectives were raised which included:To ascertain the relationship between virtual learning and academic performance of student on chemistry, to ascertain the challenges of virtual learning in secondary school and to ascertain how effective is virtual learning in teaching of chemistry in secondary school. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The total population for the study is 200 staff of selects secondary school in Uyo. The researcher used questionnaires as the instrument for the data collection. Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for this study. A total of 133 respondents made principals, teachers, senior staff and junior staff were used for the study. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentages and frequencies

Conclusion

One can conclude that the study of virtual learning  enhances students’  understanding of laboratory chemistry concepts, acquisition and improve performances in chemistry  as  an  alternative  to  actual  chemistry laboratory  in  Nigerian  Senior  Secondary Schools.  It is as well profitable for male and female Chemistry students of the same environment,  to  learn chemistry  through virtual application  could prop  up  their interest  for enhanced performance of chemistry students in Nigeria

Recommendation

There are many understandings of e-Learning effectiveness such as there is a significant association between the expected and observed frequencies for the Quality of pictures and quality of video of E-learning Chemistry programme. It may be sure to clarify what would make your solutions effective.  To know at what extended level measurements will give you the documentation your stakeholders require and the answers you need to continuously improve your e-learning solutions. Be reflective and consider whether or not your face-to-face and eLearning solutions should use different definitions of effectiveness. Aim to compare your solution to other solutions using the same effectiveness of the other subjects or content also
