CHAPTER ONE

Objectives of the Study

The major purpose of this study examines environmental factors and their influence on student’s academic performance while the general purpose included the following;

  1. To know if family size have influence of academic performance of students.
  2. To find out if infrastructural facilities have influence of students academic performance.
  3. To determine if adequacy of qualified teachers has any relationship with students academic performance.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

This chapter reviews the literature on the impact of social media on students’ academic performance among senior secondary school students. It discusses issues arising from the topic of interest as viewed from different perspectives, with a view of giving a theoretical and empirical foundation to the study.

LITERATURE REVIEW

Orlu (2013) examined the influence of environmental factors on the academic performance of students in Port Harcourt local government area of Rivers State. In his work questionnaires were utilized to elicit information from the respondents. Data was analysed, percentages were used to find solutions to the research questions.

Shamaki 2015 in his study determined the influence of learning environment on students’ academic achievement in mathematics at senior secondary school level. He investigated some components of learning environment and their possible influence on students’ academic achievement in mathematics. His results shows that, there is significance difference between the mean performance of students taught in an ideal learning environment and that of students taught in a dull learning environment al 0.05 level of significance. The findings were discussed with a view to improving both the quality of learning environment and academic achievement in mathematics. After which, recommendations were made for the improvement of the learning environment.

Oladebinu et al. in 2018 carried out a study to assess factors affecting students’ academic performance in Colleges of Education in southwest, Nigeria. Four hundred and eighty students from six Colleges of Education were randomly selected for their study. Data collected were analyzed with descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found out that student’ factors, parental background, school factors, and teachers’ factors all have serious influence on students’ academic performance.  In our study we would find out if environment factors influences student’s academic performance in some selected secondary schools.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research design

The researcher used descriptive research survey design in building up this project work the choice of this research design was considered appropriate because of its advantages of identifying attributes of a large population from a group of individuals. The design was suitable for the study as the study sought to a critical analysis of environmental factors that influences students academic performance in selected secondary schools.

Sources of data collection

Data were collected from two main sources namely:

(i)Primary source and

(ii)Secondary source

Primary source:

These are materials of statistical investigation which were collected by the research for a particular purpose. They can be obtained through a survey, observation questionnaire or as experiment; the researcher has adopted the questionnaire method for this study.

Secondary source:

These are data from textbook Journal handset etc. they arise as byproducts of the same other purposes. Example administration, various other unpublished works and write ups were also used.

Population of the study

Population of a study is a group of persons or aggregate items, things the researcher is interested in getting information on the environmental factors that influences students academic performance in selected secondary schools. 200 students were selected randomly by the researcher as the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

PRESENTATION ANALYSIS INTERPRETATION OF DATA

INTRODUCTION

Efforts will be made at this stage to present, analyze and interpret the data collected during the field survey. This presentation will be based on the responses from the completed questionnaires. The result of this exercise will be summarized in tabular forms for easy references and analysis. It will also show answers to questions relating to the research questions for this research study. The researcher employed simple percentage in the analyzing the data obtained.

DATA ANALYSIS

The data collected from the respondents were analyzed in tabular form with simple percentage for easy understanding.

A total of 133 (one hundred and thirty three) questionnaires were distributed and 133 questionnaires were returned.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain a critical analysis on the impact of environmental factors that influences students’ academic performance in selected secondary schools.

In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations are made, which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefit in addressing the challenges of environmental factors on students’ academic performance.

Summary

This study aimed at having a critical analysis of impact of social media on students’ academic performance among senior secondary students. Four objectives were raised. These objectives include:  to know if family size have influence of academic performance of students and to find out if infrastructural facilities have influence of students academic performance, and lastly to determine if adequacy of qualified teachers has any relationship with students academic performance.

Conclusion

Based on the above findings pertaining to the objectives of the study the following conclusions are drawn. From the collected and analysed, it can be concluded that Family size have influence on academic performance of students in secondary school in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State and that adequacy of qualified teachers affect academic performance of students in Secondary School in Esan West Local; Government Area of Edo State and that infrastructural facilities have effects on academic performance of students in Secondary School in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

Recommendation

Based on these findings, the following recommendations were made; school should try to maintain the school facilities and that there should be interactions between teachers and students. Teachers should relate to all the students no matter their background. Finally it is hereby recommended that school facilities should be adequately provided; Secondary schools should be given appropriate attention and funding while government should provide alternative power supply by purchasing generator plant for the schools.
