LITERATURE REVIEW
Conceptual Framework
This section provides an exploration of key concepts related to community development and its impact on single mothers, particularly in Oluyole LGA. The sub-headings below will offer definitions, critiques, and relevance to the study’s focus on single mothers and their socio-economic challenges.
Community Development and Empowerment of Marginalized Groups
Community development programs have been widely recognized as essential mechanisms for empowering marginalized groups, especially women, by improving their social and economic well-being. These initiatives aim to alleviate the challenges faced by vulnerable populations such as single mothers, who are often excluded from mainstream economic activities due to various social, cultural, and economic barriers. In Nigeria, as in many other countries, women, especially in rural areas, are significantly disadvantaged in terms of access to resources, education, and economic opportunities (Akinyemi & Okunlola, 2019).
One of the key objectives of community development is to provide marginalized groups with the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to enhance their livelihoods. This is particularly important for single mothers, who often face unique challenges such as the absence of a father figure, economic hardship, and social stigmatization. Community development programs aim to alleviate these challenges by providing single mothers with access to resources such as vocational training, microfinance, healthcare support, and educational programs. Through these programs, single mothers are empowered to improve their socio-economic status and contribute meaningfully to their communities (Adejoh et al., 2019).
In the Nigerian context, various studies have examined the impact of community development programs on women’s empowerment. Akinyemi (2018) identifies the factors influencing women’s participation in rural development projects, including cultural norms, educational opportunities, and the availability of resources. By addressing these factors, community development programs help to bridge the gap between marginalized women and economic opportunities. Similarly, Ilori et al. (2022) highlight the role of self-help community development projects in empowering women in Ogun State, emphasizing the importance of collective action in improving women’s socio-economic status.

Research Design
The research design chosen for this study is a quantitative survey research design, which is widely recognized for its ability to collect large amounts of data from a specific population efficiently and systematically (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2019). The quantitative approach allows for an objective analysis of the relationship between different variables, ensuring that the findings can be generalized across a broader population. Specifically, a survey design was adopted for this study due to its suitability in examining patterns and relationships within a larger population through structured questionnaires (Bell, 2022). The approach is beneficial in understanding the challenges faced by single mothers in Oluyole LGA regarding community development initiatives. The survey design enables the researcher to gather statistical data, which can be analyzed to identify trends, correlations, and potential solutions, allowing for the formulation of evidence-based recommendations for policymakers and stakeholders involved in community development programs.
Study Settings
The study is based in the Oluyole Local Government Area (LGA), situated within the Ibadan metropolis, Oyo State, Nigeria. Oluyole LGA was selected as the geographical setting for the study due to its unique socio-economic composition and the presence of various community development initiatives aimed at empowering women, particularly single mothers. The LGA consists of both urban and semi-urban areas, where community development programs are regularly implemented, making it a suitable context for exploring how single mothers engage with such initiatives. The setting provides an opportunity to examine the impact of these programs on single mothers’ socio-economic status, particularly given the diverse socio-cultural and economic challenges they face. Additionally, the local government area’s involvement in gender-specific development projects, including women’s economic empowerment and skill development programs, aligns with the focus of this study.
Population of the Study
The population for this study includes single mothers residing in Oluyole LGA, estimated to be 2,000 individuals based on recent demographic data. The selection of single mothers as the target population is essential because this group often experiences unique socio-economic and cultural challenges that may affect their participation in community development initiatives (Chaudhuri, 2023). According to Bernard and Ryan (2019), selecting the right population ensures that the study’s findings are relevant to the research objectives. The population of single mothers in Oluyole LGA has been identified as a significant demographic group within the community, with varying levels of participation in community development initiatives. The study aims to understand how specific interventions have impacted this group’s socio-economic empowerment, given their unique circumstances.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary of Findings
This study focused on assessing the impact of community development programs on the economic and social well-being of single mothers in Oluyole Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State, Nigeria. It sought to understand how these programs influence the lives of single mothers, particularly regarding their financial stability, social integration, and the barriers they face in accessing and benefiting from such programs. The findings were drawn from a survey of single mothers in the area, with the data analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
One of the main findings of the study is that a significant number of single mothers reported positive changes in their economic well-being as a result of participating in community development programs. The programs helped improve their income-generating activities, providing them with skills and financial independence. Many respondents indicated that their participation in these programs allowed them to become more financially self-sufficient, which is crucial for their livelihood and the well-being of their families. These women reported that the programs helped them develop skills that made them more competitive in the labor market, contributing to an increase in their earnings. In addition, community development programs were seen to provide access to resources such as grants and loans, which further facilitated the economic empowerment of the participants.
Social well-being was another area where community development programs showed a significant impact. Single mothers in Oluyole LGA indicated that their participation in these programs enhanced their social relationships, helping them form networks with other women and individuals in their communities. These networks provided emotional support, camaraderie, and opportunities for collaboration, all of which helped improve their sense of belonging and community integration. Additionally, the programs promoted better access to healthcare and other social services, further contributing to the overall social well-being of the respondents. The increased social capital, in the form of new relationships and support systems, was viewed as a major benefit by many of the single mothers.
Despite the positive outcomes, the study also highlighted several challenges that single mothers face in accessing and benefiting from community development programs. A recurring issue was the lack of adequate information about available programs. Many respondents indicated that they were unaware of certain programs, which hindered their participation. This finding suggests a need for better information dissemination and outreach efforts to ensure that single mothers are fully informed about the opportunities available to them.
Financial challenges were also a significant barrier to participation. Many single mothers reported that they could not fully benefit from the programs due to financial constraints. This finding points to the need for programs to consider the financial circumstances of participants, especially in low-income areas. The financial burden of transportation, childcare, and other costs associated with attending these programs was a major deterrent for many single mothers. Addressing these financial barriers could enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of community development programs.
Another barrier identified was the lack of childcare services during community development programs. Many single mothers stated that they could not participate in the programs because they lacked affordable and accessible childcare. This finding underscores the importance of integrating childcare support into community development programs, particularly for single mothers who are the primary caregivers for their children. Providing childcare services would enable these women to participate more fully in the programs, thereby increasing their chances of benefiting from the resources and opportunities offered.
Strict eligibility criteria were also mentioned as a challenge. Some single mothers reported that they did not meet the requirements for certain programs, which prevented them from benefiting from them. This issue highlights the need for more inclusive criteria that take into account the diverse needs and circumstances of single mothers. Flexibility in eligibility could allow a broader range of women to participate in and benefit from community development programs.
The study also tested hypotheses to determine the significance of the relationships between community development programs and the economic and social well-being of single mothers. The results of the One-Sample T-Test indicated that there is a significant relationship between community development programs and both the economic and social well-being of single mothers. The null hypotheses were rejected, suggesting that these programs do indeed have a positive impact on the participants’ lives. Specifically, the study found that community development programs significantly improve the economic well-being of single mothers by enhancing their financial independence and income-generating activities. Similarly, the programs were found to significantly improve their social well-being by providing emotional support, fostering social connections, and enhancing their sense of community.
Conclusion
The results from the hypotheses tested in this study strongly support the positive impact of community development programs on the economic and social well-being of single mothers in Oluyole LGA. The One-Sample T-Test results revealed that community development programs significantly contribute to enhancing the economic independence of single mothers, providing them with skills, financial resources, and networking opportunities. Furthermore, these programs significantly improve their social well-being by fostering relationships, providing emotional support, and enhancing community integration. The rejection of the null hypothesis in all cases indicates that community development programs are effective in addressing the needs of single mothers and contribute to their overall empowerment.
However, the study also identified significant barriers to accessing and benefiting from these programs, such as inadequate information, financial constraints, lack of childcare services, and strict eligibility criteria. These barriers hinder full participation, suggesting that improvements in outreach, financial support, childcare provisions, and eligibility flexibility are needed to maximise the effectiveness of these programs.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations were proposed:
- Enhance Access to Information:: One of the key barriers identified in the study is the lack of adequate information about community development programs. It is recommended that local authorities and program implementers increase awareness through various channels such as community meetings, social media, and printed materials. Additionally, information should be disseminated in a timely and easily accessible manner to ensure that single mothers are fully aware of the available opportunities.
- Provide Financial Support and Flexibility: Financial constraints were highlighted as a major barrier preventing full participation. It is recommended that community development programs provide targeted financial support, such as microloans or stipends, to help single mothers overcome financial barriers. Furthermore, eligibility criteria should be reviewed and made more flexible to accommodate the unique challenges faced by single mothers, ensuring broader participation.
- Introduce Childcare Services During Programs:: The lack of childcare services was identified as another challenge hindering participation. To address this, it is recommended that community development programs introduce childcare facilities or provide stipends for childcare services, enabling single mothers to attend programs without the worry of childcare responsibilities.
- Strengthen Emotional and Social Support Networks:: The findings indicate that social relationships and emotional support gained from these programs are crucial for single mothers. To enhance these benefits, it is recommended that more structured support networks be incorporated into community development programs. This could involve regular mentorship, peer support groups, and partnerships with local women’s organizations to create a sense of community and solidarity.
- Monitor and Evaluate Program Effectiveness:: While community development programs have shown positive outcomes, it is essential to regularly monitor and evaluate their effectiveness. It is recommended that program implementers conduct periodic evaluations to assess the impact on single mothers’ economic and social well-being. These evaluations can help identify areas for improvement and ensure that the programs are continuously adapted to meet the evolving needs of single mothers in the community.
Limitations of the Study
One of the primary limitations of this study is the reliance on self-reported data from single mothers, which may be influenced by personal biases or a desire to present themselves in a favorable light. Additionally, the study is geographically limited to Oluyole LGA, which may not fully represent the experiences of single mothers in other regions with different socio-economic conditions. The sample size, though adequate, may not encompass all possible perspectives, and there is also a possibility of non-response bias, where certain groups of single mothers did not participate in the study. Furthermore, the study focused primarily on quantitative data, which may not capture the full depth of individual experiences and challenges faced by single mothers. Finally, the cross-sectional nature of the study provides a snapshot of the situation at a particular time, limiting the ability to draw conclusions about long-term trends or the causal relationships between community development programs and the well-being of single mothers.
Suggestions for Further Studies
Future studies could expand the scope by including a larger and more diverse sample of single mothers from different regions, which would provide a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of community development programs across various socio-economic contexts. Additionally, qualitative research methods such as in-depth interviews or focus group discussions could be employed to capture richer, more nuanced insights into the personal experiences and challenges faced by single mothers in accessing and benefiting from community development programs. Longitudinal studies could also be conducted to assess the long-term effects of these programs on the economic and social well-being of single mothers. Moreover, future research could explore the role of government policies and institutional support in enhancing or hindering the effectiveness of community development initiatives for single mothers. Lastly, comparative studies between different community development models could provide valuable insights into the most effective strategies for improving the welfare of single mothers and other marginalized groups.
