CHAPTER ONE

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study was to ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on students’ choice of clothing and socialization in tertiary institutions.

The specific objectives were to:

  • ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on students’ socialization in University of Benin.
  • ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on clothing utilization of students’ in University of Benin
  • ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on fashion trend of students’ in University of Benin.
  • ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on clothing accessories of students’ within University of Benin.

CHAPTER TWO

 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Historical Analysis of Home Movies in Nigeria

This review will explore the history of home movies in Nigeria and also delve into the Influences home movies viewing has on its audience, primarily with how the content of home movies Influence attitudes and behaviours of students of tertiary institutions in Abia State.. Home movies in Nigeria started during the period when a colonial film unit was set up in 1947, but until the 1960’s little more than documentaries were produced. Then, came Nigeria’s first film production companies, Latola Film (1962) and Calpeny Nigeria Ltd. In 1970, Kongi’s Harvest, based on Wole Soyika’s play, was 10 produced by Calpeny and directed by American Ossic Davies. This was the first flowing of local film in the 1970s and 1980s. With foreign exchange problems and the popularity of home movies on video, most indigenous film producers have now turned to making videos, usually of poor acting, filming and production quality, but which sell well. VHS copies are handled and marketed by distributor, who make them widely available and affordable and with the current video boom has left the film industry neglected. What is being contented with here is the fact that the film industry in Nigeria is yet to emerge as an authentic cultural or economic force capable of drawing to its self the attention of policy makers and as an integral component of the national development effort. Home movies viewing has evolved into the most time-consuming leisure activity of the students of tertiary institutions in Abia State. In fact by the age of 15 most children would have spent much time watching home movies through television and video players than doing anything else. Home movies film viewing has been the topic of much scientific inquiry.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain influence of celebrity lifestyle on female student pattern dressing in the university of Benin. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain influence of celebrity lifestyle on female student pattern dressing in the university of Benin of Nigeria

Summary

This study was on It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain influence of celebrity lifestyle on female student pattern dressing in the university of Benin. Three objectives were raised which included:  ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on students’ socialization in University of Benin, ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on clothing utilization of students’ in University of Benin,  ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on fashion trend of students’ in University of Benin and  ascertain the influence of celebrities’ dressing styles on clothing accessories of students’ within University of Benin. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from University of Benin. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

 Conclusion

Obviously, dress patterns in home movies have Influence on the dress style of students in tertiary institutions in Benin. But this Influence is positive. This is manifested in the pride these students derive in seeing African values celebrated as reflected in their dress patterns. The study showed that most of these students expose themselves to the home movie medium and even a higher percentage do so at regular basis and are more prone to noticing the dress patterns on these home movies. The home movies are therefore veritable instruments for mobilization and national orientation for desirable attitudes. Some of the home movies however, as the study showed, do not reflect the good values and moral rectitude of Nigerian and African culture.

Recommendation

A proactive media approach to issues containing cultural imperialism should be adopted by the media.  The home movie industry should use their medium to promote the very rich cultural values of Nigeria and African.

Media and film training institutions should as a matter of national importance encourage the increase in local content of their training curricula and structure.

It is imperative that the National Film and Video Censor Board (NFVCB) and other regulatory agencies continue to review the educational curriculum of movies training institutes in the country and the emphasis should be on the promotion of African culture.

The Tourism industry should cash in on the large audience that the entertainment sector is drawing, to re-brand, package and present the good image of Nigeria as a country of economic opportunities and decent moral values.
