Objective of the Study

The main purpose of this study is to assess Interpersonal Communication and Information Dissemination in Udung Uko LGA. Specifically, the study is intended to:

  1. Identify the patterns of interpersonal communication in Udung Uko Local Government Area
  2. Examine the extent of application and contribution of interpersonal communication in Information Dissemination in Udung Uko Local Government Area
  3. Identify hindrances to effective application of interpersonal communication in Information Dissemination in Udung Uko Local Government Area
  4. Determine strategies for enhancing interpersonal communication in Information Dissemination in Udung Uko Local Government Area

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal communication is an important thing in our daily life. A person living in this world will always use interpersonal communication. Almost every day a person will communicate with each other either at work, at school, at college, at home or in public places. According to Beebe & Beebe and Redmond. (1999), most people spend as much as 80 to 90 percent of the time awake with interpersonal communication. According to Hassan and Mohamed (2000), Interpersonal communication is the process of how one is to share experiences with other individuals. As we all know, every person has the experience and knowledge. People who communicate with each state experience and knowledge respectively. By the way, they discover the meaning of the exchange. According to the statement Centko (1998), interpersonal communication is selective, systematic, unique, and a process of interaction between people which develop knowledge of the individual and other people and share experiences and gain meaning as a result of changes made. Interpersonal communication has four principles of interpersonal communication is inevitable, interpersonal communication is the thing that cannot be changed back, interpersonal communication Interpersonal communication is complicated and is contextual (Beebe et al., 1999). The first principles of interpersonal communication is inevitable means a person will always communicate with others regardless of place and atmosphere. Interpersonal communication occurs not only through words but it also occurs through non-verbal such as the eyes and body language. The second principle is that interpersonal communication is a thing that cannot be changed back. It is the same as the Russian proverb that “Once a word goes out of your mouth, you’re free to never swallow it again” (Beebe et al., 1999). The third principle is complicated interpersonal communication. This means that it is not easy to explain things to others when communicating. Fourth principle is that interpersonal communication is contextual which is the context that involves five psychology, relationships, situation, environment and culture.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Introduction

In this chapter, we would describe how the study was carried out.

Research design

Research design is a detailed outline of how an investigation took place. It entails how data is collected, the data collection tools used and the mode of analyzing data collected (Cooper & Schindler (2006). This study used a descriptive research design. Gill and Johnson (2002) state that a descriptive design looks at particular characteristics of a specific population of subjects, at a particular point in time or at different times for comparative purposes. The choice of a survey design for this study was deemed appropriate as Mugenda and Mugenda (2003) attest that it enables the researcher to determine the nature of prevailing conditions without manipulating the subjects.

Further, the survey method was useful in describing the characteristics of a large population and no other method of observation can provide this general capability. On the other hand, since the time duration to complete the research project was limited, the survey method was a cost effective way to gather information from a large group of people within a short time. The survey design made feasible very large samples and thus making the results statistically significant even when analyzing multiple variables. It allowed for many questions to be asked about a given topic giving considerable flexibility to the analysis. Usually, high reliability is easy to obtain by presenting all subjects with a standardized stimulus; observer subjectivity is greatly eliminated. Cooper and Schindler (2006) assert that the results of a survey can be easily generalized to the entire population.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of three hundred and forty six (346) copies of questionnaires were distributed to the respondents but three hundred and thirty six (336) were returned. This indicates a percentage of 97.11% return rate which the researcher considered appropriate for use.

CHAPTER FIVE

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

Conclusion

Based on the findings of this study, it was concluded that the most utilized patterns of interpersonal communication in Information Dissemination  are face to face communication method, simplified language method, customer relations method, adequate attention to details, concise and precised information delivery and mutual interaction. However, it was concluded that application of interpersonal communication contributes to a great extent for effective Information Dissemination by making exchange of message easier, enhancing librarians’ understanding of users information needs, facilitating accurate and objective information provision, enhancing mutual interaction and encourages quick answers to user’ queries. Perhaps, notable hindrances to effective application of interpersonal communication in Information Dissemination were discovered by the study such as inability users to frame queries correctly, lack of adequate listening skills, stereotype and inferiority complex of librarians, lack of passion on the Information dissemination , physical distractions in the library and frustration due to poor working condition among others. The study also discovered strategies for enhancing interpersonal communication in Information dissemination  which include careful listening to reference staff and users during Information Dissemination ,avoidance of stereotype and inferiority complex in Information Dissemination , objective and accurate framing of reference questions, reference staff and users should be patient enough should avoid hostility to users.
