LITERATURE REVIEW
Conceptual Review
This section provides an overview of key concepts relevant to the study by defining them from both an ordinary perspective and scholarly viewpoints. It will also critique these concepts, highlighting their relevance and limitations in the context of youth neglect in religious institutions. The following sub-headings will be explored:
Youth and Their Role in Religious Institutions
The term “youth” is often used to describe individuals transitioning from childhood to adulthood, typically encompassing ages 15 to 35, depending on cultural and institutional definitions (Mulder et al., 2024). The United Nations and many national policies define youth based on age brackets, emphasizing their potential for social and economic contribution (Butchart et al., 2022). From a biblical perspective, youth are portrayed as instruments of divine purpose, with figures such as David, Samuel, and Timothy demonstrating leadership and faithfulness from an early age (Rees et al., 2023). Proverbs 20:29 states, โThe glory of young men is their strength,โ highlighting the vigor and potential of youth in advancing spiritual and societal causes. However, despite their acknowledged potential, many religious institutions fail to integrate youth effectively into their structures.
Youth play a crucial role in religious organizations, serving as worshippers, evangelists, volunteers, and future leaders (Rodriguez-Garcia & Akhter, 2022). They bring innovation, enthusiasm, and adaptability to church activities, making them key to the growth and continuity of religious institutions (Clement et al., 2024). Studies suggest that youth-driven ministries, when adequately supported, contribute to increased church attendance and community outreach (Stein, 2012). However, many churches fail to harness the full potential of youth, either by sidelining them from decision-making processes or limiting their participation to minor roles. This lack of engagement can result in disinterest, weakening the bond between young members and the church (Chinawa et al., 2023).
Despite their importance, youth in religious institutions face numerous challenges. One primary issue is the lack of mentorship and leadership opportunities, leading to disengagement and spiritual apathy (Ejedimu & Omumu, 2023). Financial constraints often restrict youth programs, making it difficult to sustain activities that foster their spiritual and leadership development (Chirwa, 2022). Additionally, rigid church traditions may fail to accommodate the evolving needs and interests of young people, causing a disconnect between older and younger generations (Nwachuku, 2023). If these challenges persist, churches risk losing their youth to secular alternatives or disengagement from religious life altogether (Stoltenborgh et al., 2023).

METHODOLOGY

Research Design
This study adopted a cross-sectional survey research design, which is appropriate for investigating the issue of youth neglect in the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. A quantitative approach allows for the collection of numerical data from a large population, which can be statistically analyzed to identify patterns, relationships, and trends (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2019). The survey method was chosen because it is effective in gathering data from a wide range of respondents within the targeted religious setting, making it possible to generalize the findings to a larger population (Creswell & Creswell, 2018).
The justification for employing a quantitative survey research design lies in its ability to provide objective, reliable, and replicable data, which is essential for making evidence-based recommendations for addressing youth neglect in religious institutions (Bell, Bryman, & Harley, 2019). Additionally, the structured nature of the survey method ensures consistency in data collection, thereby enhancing the validity and reliability of the findings (Frankfort-Nachmias, Nachmias, & DeWaard, 2021).
Study Settings
The study was conducted within the Northern Rivers District of the Assemblies of God Church, a region that encompasses various local congregations under the Assemblies of God denomination. The geographical area of focus is particularly relevant due to the ongoing concerns about youth neglect in church settings, which has been reported to have significant implications for church growth, leadership succession, and youth engagement.
The Northern Rivers District was selected as the study setting because of its diverse congregations and its strategic importance to the overall mission of the Assemblies of God Church. By examining this particular district, the study aims to provide insights into the broader issue of youth neglect within religious institutions, particularly those operating in similar socio-cultural contexts (Bell, 2022).
Population of the Study
The target population for this study comprised all youths and church leaders within the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District, estimated at 20,000 respondents. This population size was determined based on records obtained from the Northern Rivers District Headquarters, which provided data on the approximate number of youths and leaders across various local congregations.
The justification for selecting this population is rooted in the need to examine both the perspectives of the youth and the church leadership to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue of youth neglect (Bernard & Ryan, 2019). Moreover, involving both groups allows for a more balanced analysis of the problem, as it highlights both the experiences of the neglected youths and the strategies employed by church leaders to address these concerns (Easterby-Smith, Thorpe, & Jackson, 2018).

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Summary of Findings
The study investigated the factors contributing to youth neglect, its implications on church growth and sustainability, and strategies for enhancing youth participation and engagement in the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. The findings were drawn from data obtained through questionnaires administered to respondents within the church community. The results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-sample t-tests to test the formulated hypotheses.
The findings revealed that various factors contribute to youth neglect within the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. Prominent among these factors is the exclusion of youths from leadership decision-making processes, inadequate mentorship programs, and insufficient financial investment in youth development. The analysis showed that the mean value for factors contributing to youth neglect was higher than the test value, indicating a significant relationship between these factors and youth neglect. This neglect creates a gap between the youth and the leadership of the church, resulting in decreased motivation, limited participation, and a growing sense of disconnection from church activities.
The study also highlighted the implications of youth neglect on church growth and sustainability. It was found that neglecting the youth negatively affects membership retention, leadership succession, and overall church development. The analysis showed that the mean value for the implications of youth neglect was significantly higher than the test value, suggesting that churches with poor youth engagement struggle to maintain growth and stability. The absence of youth involvement in essential church functions weakens their commitment, reduces their sense of belonging, and ultimately hampers the church’s ability to retain its members over time.
Furthermore, the findings established that the lack of youth-focused programs diminishes the churchโs relevance to young people. The results showed that without deliberate efforts to include the youth in planning, leadership, and decision-making, their participation will continue to decline. The neglect of youth not only discourages them from contributing their skills and talents but also prevents the church from benefiting from the energy, creativity, and innovative ideas the youth can offer.
The findings also demonstrated that implementing youth-centered strategies could significantly improve youth engagement and participation in church activities. The analysis revealed that designing programs tailored to address the interests and needs of the youth, including them in decision-making processes, providing mentorship opportunities, and investing in their development, would enhance their commitment to church activities. The result showed a higher mean value for strategies aimed at enhancing youth participation, indicating that targeted interventions are necessary for promoting growth and sustainability within the church.
It was also found that regular leadership training and mentorship programs are essential in preparing youths for future responsibilities. This approach will not only improve their skills and knowledge but also foster a sense of belonging and loyalty to the church. Allowing youths to contribute to the decision-making process will also enhance their commitment and willingness to engage in church activities.
Overall, the findings of the study demonstrate that youth neglect is a critical issue that affects their participation and the growth and sustainability of the church. The current structure and approach to youth engagement in the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District are inadequate, as reflected by the significant gap between the leadership and the youth. However, the study highlights that implementing youth-centered strategies has the potential to bridge this gap and promote effective youth engagement.
The study underscores the need for a paradigm shift in how the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District addresses youth-related matters. To enhance youth participation and promote sustainable church growth, deliberate efforts must be made to include youths in decision-making processes, provide adequate mentorship, and invest in their overall development. Addressing these issues will not only strengthen the churchโs structure but also enhance its relevance and appeal to the younger generation.
Implications of the Findings
The findings of this study have significant implications for the leadership and overall growth of the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. One major implication is that youth neglect has a detrimental impact on church growth and sustainability. The results demonstrated that inadequate mentorship programs, exclusion from decision-making processes, and insufficient financial investment in youth development are key factors contributing to youth neglect. This indicates that if the church leadership continues to overlook the needs and contributions of the youth, it will face difficulties in retaining membership, ensuring effective leadership succession, and achieving sustainable growth.
The findings also suggest that youth neglect undermines the churchโs relevance to the younger generation. The absence of youth-focused programs and initiatives leads to declining interest and participation, which can weaken the church’s ability to attract and retain young members. This poses a threat to the churchโs long-term survival, as the youth are expected to take up leadership roles and continue the churchโs mission in the future. Without deliberate efforts to empower and engage them, the church may struggle to maintain its relevance in a rapidly evolving society.
Moreover, the findings highlight the importance of implementing youth-centered strategies to enhance engagement and participation. Designing programs that address the interests and needs of the youth, providing mentorship, and involving them in decision-making processes are essential steps toward promoting their active involvement. This approach will not only improve their commitment to church activities but also foster a sense of ownership and belonging. The willingness of the youth to contribute their skills, creativity, and energy is crucial for the churchโs growth and development.
Furthermore, the study emphasizes the need for the church leadership to adopt a more inclusive and participatory approach in its dealings with the youth. Allowing them to contribute meaningfully to church activities and policies will enhance their commitment and loyalty. The findings imply that empowering the youth through leadership training and mentorship will prepare them for future responsibilities, ensuring a seamless transition of leadership within the church.
In essence, the findings call for a reassessment of existing policies and practices concerning youth engagement within the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. The church leadership must prioritize youth-related issues and invest in programs that will promote effective participation and growth. Addressing these challenges will enhance the churchโs relevance, sustainability, and overall mission.
Conclusion
The results from the hypotheses tested provide clear evidence that youth neglect significantly impacts their participation in church activities, church growth, and sustainability within the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. The one-sample t-test results revealed that factors contributing to youth neglect, such as inadequate mentorship, exclusion from decision-making processes, and lack of youth-focused programs, are significantly related to the declining participation of youths in church activities. Furthermore, the negative impact of youth neglect on church growth and sustainability was evident, highlighting the urgent need for strategic interventions to address this issue.
Additionally, the findings established that implementing youth-centered strategies, such as leadership training, mentorship programs, and inclusive decision-making, would significantly enhance youth engagement and participation. This underscores the importance of church leadership acknowledging the unique needs of the youth and creating an environment that fosters their growth, involvement, and commitment.
In conclusion, the study demonstrates that addressing youth neglect is essential for ensuring the growth, sustainability, and effective leadership succession of the Assemblies of God Northern Rivers District. The adoption of youth-centered strategies will not only enhance their participation but also strengthen the churchโs relevance and overall mission.
