Provision of a Two-shaft Table Loom Applied to the Creation of Contemporary Male Apparel
Chapter One
Objectivesย of theย Study
Theย mainย objectiveย ofย thisย projectย isย providingย aย two-shaftย tableย loomย toย theย Department of Fine andย Applied Arts University of Beninย for the production ofย wovenย fabrics.
The project is aimed a adding a new Two โ shaft table loom to the available ones inย theย Departmentย of Fineย And Appliedย Artsย University of Beninย for theย students toย work with in order to reduce the stress inadequate loom for both students and theย lecturers.
Theย specificย objectivesย areย to:
- Provide a two-shaft table loom.
- Produce woven fabrics of chosen colours using the
- Adapt the woven fabrics for the creation of contemporary male Apparel.
CHAPTERย TWO
REVIEWย OFย RELATED LITERATURE
Theย chapterย isย aboutย gettingย informationย fromย books,ย journals,ย magazines,ย internet,ย oral interviews, discussion etceteraย thatย areย relevantย toย theย project.
Itย hasย been discussedย based on theย followingย sub-headings:
- Definition of Loom
- Types of Loom
- Definition of Weaving
- History of Weaving
- Types of Weaving
Definitionย of Loom
A loom is a machine used in weaving fabrics from yarn or other fibres. A wovenย fabric produced on a loom is made by interlacing two sets of threads at right angles.ย The longitudinal threads are called the warp, and the transverse threads are called theย weftย otherwiseย known asย filling. Microsoftย Encartaย 2009.
Typesย ofย Loom
There are basically two major types of loom and these include:
(i).ย theย traditional loom
Advertisements
(ii). ย ย ย ย the modern loom
Theย Traditionalย Loom:
This is a type of loom used by local weavers in the rural areas in Nigeria. Thisย type of loom is dominant in areas that weaving is practiced. In Nigeria, there are twoย mainย types of traditional looms which are:
Horizontalย Narrowย Bandย Loom:
(i).ย According to Eicher (Nigerian Hand Crafted Textiles 1976) the horizontalย narrowband loom with heddles and treadles is often known as the Sudaneseย loom. This kind ofย loomย isย mostlyย usedย byย boys orย men.
(ii) ย ย ย Vertical Loom: This kind of loom is used by girls and women which is muchย less complex in its construction. It has a fixed frame, a heddle โ stick or swordย andย no treadles.ย Its originย isย quiteย not clear.
Theย Modernย Loom:
Theย modernย loomย isย aย kindย ofย loomย usedย byย theย presentย dayย weavers.ย Thisย loomย did not exist at theย timeย weavingย started in theย ancientย time.
These may include the following:ย Table Loom
Underย this, weย have:
Theย twoย โ shaft-ย tableย loom
Theย four-shaft tableย loomย etc.
Theย Two-Shaftย Tableย Loom:
This loom as the name implies has shaft 1 and 2 to be precise. The researcherย was able to explore the potential of this loom to produce fabrics that would be used toย customizeย contemporaryย apparelsย for men asย end-use.
This loom hasย the capacityย of producingย onlyย plainย weaves on it.
Definitionย of Weaving?
Weavingย isย aย methodย ofย creatingย fabricย byย interlacingย twoย setsย ofย yarnsย threads called the warp and weft warp threads to form the base for weaving; there areย arranged parallel to one another and held in tension on a loom. The weft is a singleย thread that is passed over and under the warp threads in a systematic way to create aย solidย or patterned pieceย of cloth.
CHAPTERย THREE
EQUIPMENT,ย TOOLS,ย MATERIALSย ANDย METHOD
This chapter gives a detailed account of the step by step activity that wasย carried out in order to actualise this project. This chapter also explains the methodย used in carrying out this project. The materials, tools and equipments used in thisย projectย areย listed below.
Theย Two-Shaftย Tableย Loom
As stated by Osaigbovo (2014:47), the two shaft table loom as the name implies is a type of portable loom usually placed on a table for weaving. The table loom though may be simple in outlook, can create several of countless designs of woven fabrics. Unlike other looms like the narrow band and vertical looms whose designs are mainly stripe designs? The table loom can produce very intricate weaves for sampling and as such is used for research, teaching and business purposes. It is absolutely rigid and true when at work which is so necessary for a perfect weaving to take place. The loom works in quietness, smoothness and it also work accurately when in a good condition. Hence, making good use of this loom makes one a really good and skilful weaver. The weaver should be highly skilled in weaving because, however beautiful colour and texture may be needed; the hand work may be spoilt if there are faults and inaccuracies seen running through it. So to do away with this, the weaver is always careful from the beginning as some mistakes cannot be easily correctedย andย evenย whenย theyย canย be,ย itย amountsย toย greatย lossย ofย timeย andย energyย andย resources.
CHAPTERย FOUR
DESCRIPTIVEย ANALYSIS OFย THEย PROJECTย ANDย END-USE
This chapter describes the woven fabric weaving and discusses the end use withย visualsย forย the purposeย ofย clarity.
CHAPTERย FIVE
ย Conclusion
Inย a bidย to solve theย problem ofย insufficient facilities in the Department ofย Fine and Applied Arts University of Benin the research came about. Therefore theย research is about the provision of a two-shaft table loom to the students of theย department. Loom is a necessity in this department especially to textile studentsย and lecturers because it aids learning process and also help lecturers to teachย without stress and students will also be able to practice what they have learnt inย class. Moreover, this researcher also went into production of contemporary maleย apparel with the woven fabric gotten from the loom. Weaving is an aspect of artย that should be embraced because of its numerous advantages so I recommend thisย research project for students who want to delve into Art and even those who areย already in the art community. It is my hope that this attempt would be appreciatedย by students of this department as this would enhance their academic and personalย skills.
Nevertheless, any suggestion to make this project a better one would be highlyย appreciated.
