Chapter One

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this project is providing a two-shaft table loom to the Department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Benin for the production of woven fabrics.

The project is aimed a adding a new Two – shaft table loom to the available ones in the Department of Fine And Applied Arts University of Benin for the students to work with in order to reduce the stress inadequate loom for both students and the lecturers.

The specific objectives are to:

  1. Provide a two-shaft table loom.
  2. Produce woven fabrics of chosen colours using the
  3. Adapt the woven fabrics for the creation of contemporary male Apparel.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

The chapter is about getting information from books, journals, magazines, internet, oral interviews, discussion etcetera that are relevant to the project.

It has been discussed based on the following sub-headings:

  • Definition of Loom
  • Types of Loom
  • Definition of Weaving
  • History of Weaving
  • Types of Weaving

Definition of Loom

A loom is a machine used in weaving fabrics from yarn or other fibres. A woven fabric produced on a loom is made by interlacing two sets of threads at right angles. The longitudinal threads are called the warp, and the transverse threads are called the weft otherwise known as filling. Microsoft Encarta 2009.

Types of Loom

There are basically two major types of loom and these include:

(i). the traditional loom

(ii).     the modern loom

The Traditional Loom:

This is a type of loom used by local weavers in the rural areas in Nigeria. This type of loom is dominant in areas that weaving is practiced. In Nigeria, there are two main types of traditional looms which are:

Horizontal Narrow Band Loom:

(i). According to Eicher (Nigerian Hand Crafted Textiles 1976) the horizontal narrowband loom with heddles and treadles is often known as the Sudanese loom. This kind of loom is mostly used by boys or men.

(ii)    Vertical Loom: This kind of loom is used by girls and women which is much less complex in its construction. It has a fixed frame, a heddle – stick or sword and no treadles. Its origin is quite not clear.

The Modern Loom:

The modern loom is a kind of loom used by the present day weavers. This loom did not exist at the time weaving started in the ancient time.

These may include the following: Table Loom

Under this, we have:

The two – shaft- table loom

The four-shaft table loom etc.

The Two-Shaft Table Loom:

This loom as the name implies has shaft 1 and 2 to be precise. The researcher was able to explore the potential of this loom to produce fabrics that would be used to customize contemporary apparels for men as end-use.

This loom has the capacity of producing only plain weaves on it.

Definition of Weaving?

Weaving is a method of creating fabric by interlacing two sets of yarns threads called the warp and weft warp threads to form the base for weaving; there are arranged parallel to one another and held in tension on a loom. The weft is a single thread that is passed over and under the warp threads in a systematic way to create a solid or patterned piece of cloth.

CHAPTER THREE

EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, MATERIALS AND METHOD

This chapter gives a detailed account of the step by step activity that was carried out in order to actualise this project. This chapter also explains the method used in carrying out this project. The materials, tools and equipments used in this project are listed below.

The Two-Shaft Table Loom

As stated by Osaigbovo (2014:47), the two shaft table loom as the name implies is a type of portable loom usually placed on a table for weaving. The table loom though may be simple in outlook, can create several of countless designs of woven fabrics. Unlike other looms like the narrow band and vertical looms whose designs are mainly stripe designs? The table loom can produce very intricate weaves for sampling and as such is used for research, teaching and business purposes. It is absolutely rigid and true when at work which is so necessary for a perfect weaving to take place. The loom works in quietness, smoothness and it also work accurately when in a good condition. Hence, making good use of this loom makes one a really good and skilful weaver. The weaver should be highly skilled in weaving because, however beautiful colour and texture may be needed; the hand work may be spoilt if there are faults and inaccuracies seen running through it. So to do away with this, the weaver is always careful from the beginning as some mistakes cannot be easily corrected and even when they can be, it amounts to great loss of time and energy and resources.

CHAPTER FOUR

DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS OF THE PROJECT AND END-USE

This chapter describes the woven fabric weaving and discusses the end use with visuals for the purpose of clarity.

CHAPTER FIVE

 Conclusion

In a bid to solve the problem of insufficient facilities in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts University of Benin the research came about. Therefore the research is about the provision of a two-shaft table loom to the students of the department. Loom is a necessity in this department especially to textile students and lecturers because it aids learning process and also help lecturers to teach without stress and students will also be able to practice what they have learnt in class. Moreover, this researcher also went into production of contemporary male apparel with the woven fabric gotten from the loom. Weaving is an aspect of art that should be embraced because of its numerous advantages so I recommend this research project for students who want to delve into Art and even those who are already in the art community. It is my hope that this attempt would be appreciated by students of this department as this would enhance their academic and personal skills.

Nevertheless, any suggestion to make this project a better one would be highly appreciated.
