CHAPTER ONE

THE PURPOSE OF STUDY  

This study is concern to sets out and achieves the following.

  1. To investigate whether parents in some ways, either knowing or unknowingly contribute to the deviant behaviour of students in secondary school.
  2. To determine whether the  nature of the school  administration has influence whether the socio-economic factors in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State have any influence on deviant behaviour among secondary school students.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEWED OF RELATED LITERATURE

Conceptual framework

Deviance is generally defined as any behaviour that does not conform to the established rules of a group of individuals or the society (Idris, 2016). Deviant behaviours are actions which conflict with the societal norms. Hirschi (1995) It could also be referred to as the engagement of people in criminal offences, illegal, antisocial and unethical behaviour. Any behaviour that violates the norm or social standard of the society is deviant. Once a particular people no longer consider such an act to the seriously deviant, such laws are often removed from the books, or are simply not enforced. In fact, there are many laws still on the books in the states that were once deemed by society to be necessary to prevent deviant behavior, which seem absurd by modern standards (Wilcox, and Cllen, 2010) Sociologically, behavior that violates social norms, including a formally enacted rule (Macionis, & Gerber, 2010). Deviance is a behavioural disposition that is not in conformity with an institutionalized set-up or code of conduct.( Akarowhe, 2018) Although deviance may have a negative connotation, the violation of social norms is not always a negative action; positive deviation exists in some situations. Although a norm is violated, a behavior can still be classified as positive or acceptable.(Heckert, 2002) Social norms differ throughout society and between cultures. A certain act or behaviour may be viewed as deviant and receive sanctions or punishments within one society and be seen as a normal behaviour in another society. Additionally, as a society’s understanding of social norms changes over time, so to does the collective perception of 8 deviance.(Doug, 2014). Deviance is relative to the place where it was committed or to the time the act took place. Killing another human is generally considered wrong for example, except when governments permit it during warfare or for self defense. There are two types of major deviant actions, mala in se and mala prohibita.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain the causes of deviant and delinquent behavior among students in emotan girls grammar school. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the causes of deviant and delinquent behavior among students in Emotan girls grammar school.

Summary

This study was on the causes of deviant and delinquent behavior among students in Emotan girls grammar school. Three objectives were raised which included:  To investigate whether parents in some ways, either knowing or unknowingly contribute to the deviant behaviour of students in secondary school and to determine whether the  nature of the school  administration has influence whether the socio-economic factors in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State have any influence on deviant behaviour among secondary school students. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected staff of Emotan Girls Grammar School Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

 Conclusion    

In conclusion, the findings of this study underscore the multidimensional nature of deviant and delinquent behavior among students in Emotan Girls Grammar School. Addressing these issues requires a holistic approach that addresses individual, familial, social, and environmental factors contributing to deviance and delinquency.

Moving forward, it is recommended that Emotan Girls Grammar School adopts preventive and intervention strategies that promote positive youth development, strengthen family support systems, foster a positive school climate, and provide students with alternative coping mechanisms and life skills. By addressing the underlying causes of deviant behavior and promoting resilience and well-being among students, the school can create a safe, supportive, and conducive learning environment for all.

Recommendation

Based on the findings and conclusions drawn from the study on the causes of deviant and delinquent behavior among students in Emotan Girls Grammar School, the following recommendations are proposed:

  1. Emotan Girls Grammar School should establish comprehensive counseling services aimed at addressing the emotional, psychological, and behavioral needs of students. These services should include individual counseling, group therapy sessions, and workshops on coping skills, conflict resolution, and decision-making.
  2. The school should actively engage parents and guardians in the education and well-being of their children. This can be achieved through parent-teacher meetings, parenting workshops, and family counseling sessions to address issues such as communication breakdown, parental neglect, and family conflict.
  3. Emotan Girls Grammar School should implement programs and activities that promote positive peer relationships and discourage negative peer influence. This may include peer mentoring programs, peer mediation training, and collaborative learning projects that foster cooperation and mutual respect among students.
  4. The school should prioritize efforts to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment conducive to learning and positive social interactions. This may involve implementing anti-bullying policies, enhancing supervision and security measures, and fostering a culture of respect and tolerance among students and staff.
  5. Emotan Girls Grammar School should offer a variety of extracurricular activities, sports, and recreational programs to provide students with alternative outlets for self-expression, skill development, and socialization. These activities can help channel students’ energy and interests in productive and constructive ways
