The Construction of a 2kva Automatic Voltage Regulator (Avr)
CHAPTER ONE
ย OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT
The automatic voltage regulator of rating 2KVA is a natural choice for remote control device for the consistent voltage level fluctuation of our ย ย ย power supply system. Therefore, we bear the following in mind as our objective while carrying out this project;
- 1). ย To fully understand ย the automatic means of ย controlling ย and regulating the system, Its practices, design, construction, operation ย and application ย in public ย electric power system ย engineering
- 2). to test the electric power behavior of systems or appliances connected to AVR. Also ย to perform both ย practices ย network computers, televisions, amplifier sets and other sensitive ย devices intended ย to be ย protected ย from direct ย connection ย to public electric power supply.
- 3). to practically engage in and fully understand the AVR operational modes and technology or configuration in electrical design and construction
- 4). To enhance ย power regulation ย and stabilization ย technology ย ย via ย automatic voltage ย regulation ย for our electrical and electronics appliances ย due to voltage ย variation and, incessant ย power โfluctuations.
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
in an attempt ย to ย achieve ย stability ย voltage ย and consequently ย have a ย steady output, many researchers have over the ย years ย carried ย out detailed ย and comprehensive ย researches to fathom ways ย of achieving ย this purpose. Sequel to the fact that, the power system ย ย is characterized by strong-linearity, fluctuations, hybrid system of dynamics etc. hence a review of these researches becomes imperative.
According ย to ย V.K Mehta ย and Rohit Mehta (principle ย of ย Power system, ย 2004, 2ndย ย edition), they ย opined ย that voltage ย regulation ย is very important ย in order to avoid ย or reduce the ย effect ย of ย fluctuations ย in the system. This ย they said ย can be ย achieved using ย semiconductor ย devices ย and switches which ย vary the ย rams voltage impressed ย across ย the load.
In a journal released by Larsson . M. Hill in 200, D.H. Hill and Wang ย Hill in ย 1996 respectively, they ย believed ย that ย voltage control and regulation ย are indispensable ย factor in power system ย and , thus ย aims ย at a mid or long term voltage quality ย maintenance of power systems ย in the presence of ย load and transmission ย line disturbances.
According ย to ย a ย research ย work on AVR by Ogbekhilu ย Jonathan (MIEEE), 2006 he ย stated โwhen ย variation ย of voltage ย are too wide at the point of generation or utilization, there ย will be ย erratic ย operations of the entire system, that ย of the consumer ย inclusiveโ. To ย protect ย the consumerโs ย interest, IEEE regulation ย has stipulated ย a maximum ย voltage drop of ย 5% of the ย detailed ย voltage at the consumers ย terminals.
- W. Williams , power ย electronics , 2ndedition of ย 1987, in his ย work ย stated ย emphatically that, Automatic voltage ย regulators have ย a constant voltage a.c supply and incorporate ย semiconductor ย switches ย in its operation. He ย continued ย further saying ย that ย these ย regulation ย fall into ย ย the category of ย naturally commutating converters since ย their ย thyristor ย switch ย are commuted ย by the ย alternating ย supply. He termed this โthe line commutation โ
The regulator output current ย he said, supply current ย which ย may be discontinues or ย non- sinusoidal ย and as ย a consequent ย input ย power factor ย corrections and ย harmonics ย reduction ย are usually necessary.
From ย the forgoing, ย it is obvious that ย much ย have been ย done in ย comparative ย short time and various designs and construction ย of system ย with improved mode of ย operations have emerged ย in the process. My inference ย therefore is drawn ย from the ย fact ย that, these researches have a gone ย a long ย way to prove that the automatic voltage regulator ย is indispensable ย in achieving ย the stability ย of power systems.
CHAPTER THREE
BASIC CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION OF THE AUTOMATIC VOLTAGE REGULATOR (AVR)
Advertisements
The basic ย components ย that ย the ย voltage regulation have are the ย operational ย Amplifier ย ย (OP ย AMP) and ย the exclusive OR Gate ย logical ย IC, the ย components ย ย ย are being ย controlled by other network to ย achieve ย its main and ย deserved ย operation. The automatic voltage regulator (AVR) could be ย ย said to be made up of the input, central and output sections. It is the central ย ย section is what signals the output to vary from input and be stabilized. It ย should be ย noted ย that the ย voltage regulation ย ย is the ย ratio of the difference ย between ย the full had voltage and the no-load ย voltage over the ย voltage ย of full load.
Mathematically,
Voltage regulation = voltage no-load-voltage of full load
Voltage of rated load.
From the ย foregoing , regulation ย thus implied ย the ability ย to maintain ย voltage a constant regardless of the ย variation ย ย in the ย input, following ย are the components ย used.
ย Components of the AVR
Auto โ transformer, relays, Diode rectifier, Capacitor, Resistor and variable Resistor, 12V regulator, Operational Amplifier.
CHAPTER FOUR
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
CONCLUSION
The importance of power supply in our everyday life cannot a be over-emphasized since most of our economic activities are dependent on power supply. It is certain that all the electrical and electronic appliances used in industries, institution, homes and offices will be ย at its best operation when ย the power supply is made ย constant ย and optimum ย but the reverse is the ย case if otherwise.
One of the short comings militating against the ultimate or required output of any appliance is fluctuation in power supply, not only does this situation ย affect the systems output but also ย it is possible ย to ย introduce ย fault ย into the ย system.
Consequently, damage to some of the delicate components of the system may occur, especially components operated beyond their capacity. In otherwords, constant output of power supply is necessary for effective performance of any electronic system.
The automatic voltage regulator (AVR) is one of those devices used to maintain constant level of power voltage in a power system. The AVR in its operation is automatic and is very sensitive to variations in voltage level and stabilizes its output.
CHAPTER FIVE
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
- RECOMMENDATION
In the ย construction ย of this automatic ย voltage Regulator which ย is geared ย towards understanding ย the basic ideology, knowledge, theories , principles and operations of the AVR, we, ย having ย gone through ย various procedures involved ย in the ย construction of such an important ย equipment, recommend ย that ย strict ย adherence ย to the laid ย down ย steps and operational ย conditions ย discussed ย in this project.
The construction ย of ย 2000VA automatic voltage regulator is interesting ย and educating ย albeit ย some ย constraints we encountered which took us into ย advancement ย in electrical ย and electronics ย power and voltage regulation.
