CHAPTER ONE

BJECTIVES

The proposal came up with the following objectives: –

  1. To ascertain whether green building are eco-friendly structures and environmentally friendly.
  2. To encourage regular use of recyclable materials.
  3.  To create quality building that are commercially viable.
  4.  Adopt environmentally sound and healthy work practices during both construction and occupancy.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK AND LITERATURE REVIEW

EVOLUTION OF BUILDING

Building or house is a dwelling place constructed as a home for one or more persons. Whether a crude hut or an elaborate mansion and whatever its degree of intrinsic architectural interest, a house provides protection from whether and other adversaries.

The physical characteristics of a house or building depend on the surrounding environment, available building materials, technological know-how, and such cultural determinants as the social status and economic resources of the owner or owners. In rural areas until modern times, people and animals were often housed together but today building have storage, work and guest areas with separate spaces for different activities.

Building can be wholly below ground level, dug out of the earth, or can partly below and partly above the ground. The primary materials employed are wood, brick, stone, concrete and steel. Many of these materials are used in combination. Choices of materials depend on prevalent style, individual taste, and availability. In modern building there is provision for running water, convenience and heat.

BUILDING OF TRIBAL SOCIETIES

In tribal societies the building tends to be a single volume, a room for all activities. It is usually built directly against neighbouring structures and is often close to tribal meeting house or religious structures as well. The shape of such a building may be repeated through an entire village, creating fascinating patterns as in the Dagon district of Sudan or the settlement of Zambian herds-men. Such buildings are often of simple geometric shapes, circular, conical roofs and rectangle. Clay and mud are used to fill the spaces between. In cold weather interior of these building are warm.

 

CHAPTER THREE

INTRODUCTION

This project work is a review and consideration of those principles of green building as an innovation in Nigeria construction industry. More so this chapter attempts to give a clear picture of the research design and methodology that will be used in the study. Research methodology is concerned with the process, method or procedure and tools adopted in obtaining and analyzing the data obtained in the study of the subject.

SUMMARY

Green building as innovation in Nigeria construction industry is experiencing a technological growth. These innovation are not made to be exhaustive rather it serves as an introduction to so many ideas that could revolutionalize the way building are designed and constructed with sustainable materials that have better shape, renewable beautiful and intelligent. By the use of the use of these of these materials and abiding in this innovation, it means that buildings are cheaper to run, environmentally friendly, durable and attractive to tenants.

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

  1. Nigeria construction industry and its stakeholders should develop a complete set of environmental sustainability performance indicators with suitable metrics. The Nigeria Building and research institute (NBARI) with support from the universities could champion this.
  2. The client plays a very important role in environmental sustainability because clients are the sole initiator and financer of construction projects. Therefore government as a major client in Nigeria should make use and champion use of green building materials.
  3. Furthermore, government should initiate sustainable construction measurement and management by establishing the relevance indicators, performance standards, building guidelines, requirements and best practices as part of national building code.
  4. Finally, green building as innovation and technological evolution in form of smart materials, recycled, energy, efficient, durability and modernization of construction methods must meet the challenges of higher productivity, increase functionality and improve safety

Future Research

How can government and other construction industry stake holders in Nigeria be convinced to start implementing changes in material selection that would result in decreased environmental loading and see the need to start demanding the use of environmentally less damaging construction materials, processes and activities.
