CHAPTER ONE

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The major objective of this study is to provide relevant information as regards the impact of Database on organizational performance and also to add to the bank of knowledge where any similar write-up-exists.

The objective could be broken down as follows:

  1. Examine whether Database has any impact on organizational performance.
  2. Determine whether database has any impact on management decision making.

CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Database Management Systems in Business

Besides the technical advantages of database management systems to multiple kinds of organizations, there are also specific advantages of database management systems to business operations. These systems are integrated into the interface that customers use to make purchases from a business.

The database management system’s data sorting and search features make it simple for customers to easily search a business’s database using a website, find products according to various criteria such as price and brand and make a purchase without difficulty. This makes a database management system particularly useful for businesses needing to sell to the public.

A database management system is also important because it allows users, particularly leaders, to identify relationships between relevant data. In practice, this can help leaders find relationships that are important to an organization’s operations.

For instance, among a sales-oriented organization, leaders might be able to identify high-performing sales individuals by examining their personnel files in relation to their sales performance. These two data sets are stored in separate tables, but a relational database management system can help managers easily see how the two data sets are related to one another.

Although the emphasis is often on sales-oriented companies, any company that needs to search related data can benefit from implementing these systems. The fact that these systems sort and organize data so efficiently means that companies can easily track inventory and purchases or sort client information.

Companies with multiple stores can sort financial data easily and quickly perform analyses, producing growth charts demonstrating the performance of different stores. In essence, any organization that needs to store large volumes of data, requires quick access and analysis of that data and needs to be able to easily understand trends in performance can use these systems to improve their operations.

 

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

According to Udoyen (2019), a study population is a group of elements or individuals as the case may be, who share similar characteristics. These similar features can include location, gender, age, sex or specific interest. The emphasis on study population is that it constitute of individuals or elements that are homogeneous in description.

This study was carried to examine  impact of database management system on the organizational performance in five organizations five selected organizations in Oyo state form the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

TEST OF HYPOTHESIS

H0: Database has no effect on organizational performance.

HA: Database has an effect on organizational performance.

H0: Information system has no impact on management decisions in an organization.

HA: Information system has an impact on management decisions in an organization.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was on impact of database management system on the organizational performance in five organizations. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing the challenges of database management system on the organizational performance in five organizations

Summary

This study was on impact of database management system on the organizational performance in five organizations. Two objectives were raised which included: Examine whether Database has any impact on organizational performance and determine whether database has any impact on management decision making. In line with these objectives, two research hypotheses were formulated and two null hypotheses were posited. The study adopted a survey research design and conveniently enrolled 80 participants in the study. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from five organizations in Oyo state. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

Conclusion

Conclusively, lack of management skills on database management system process by most business organization in Nigeria does not only affect the effective performance of database management system but also reduce their ability to compete favorably in the market with their large scale industrialist counterpart which has been a major stumbling block for the development and growth of business organizations in Nigeria.

Recommendation

There should be flexibility in the nature/pattern and structure of database management system in organizations so as to permit informed and easy information flow and accessibility to all information end-users, Seminars and training for the staff in the organizations to improve the strength in the organization. Organizations should also pay more attention to communication through the media agencies. This goes a long way to promoting the company’s control of the market.
