CHAPTER TWO

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

INTRODUCTION

Our focus in this chapter is to critically examine relevant literatures that would assist in explaining the research problem and furthermore recognize the efforts of scholars who had previously contributed immensely to similar research. The chapter intends to deepen the understanding of the study and close the perceived gaps.

Precisely, the chapter will be considered in three sub-headings:

  • Conceptual Framework
  • Theoretical Framework, and
  • Empirical Review

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Origin of Covid-19

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 is a pandemic disease. As of January 24, 2020, at least 830 cases were diagnosed in the China, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, United States and Nepal in which twenty-six fatalities occurred, mainly in patients who had serious underlying illness [SARS-CoV-2, 2020]. Therefore, many details of the emergence of COVID-19 such as its origin and ability to spread among humans remain unknown, an increasing number of cases day by day appear to have resulted from human to human transmission [SARS-CoV-2, 2020]. China quickly responded and informed to World Health Organization for the outbreak and sharing sequence information with the international community after discovery of the causative agent. Quickly World Health Organization responds and coordinating diagnostic development and issuing guideline on patient monitoring, treatment and providing up to date information on the outbreak of COVID-19. Therefore, several countries are screening travelers from Wuhan for detect COVID-19 cases. All the airports in different countries including India put in screening mechanisms to detect infected people which returning from China or any other places. Countries including India who evacuated their citizens from Wuhan through special flights or had travelers returning from China placed all people symptomatic or otherwise in isolation for 14 day and tested them for the Coronavirus [UNESCO.org]. In fact on 12th February 2020, China changed the definition of confirmed cases of Coronavirus on the basis of the molecular tests but with radiological, clinical and epidemiologic features of COVID-19 leading to an increase in cases by 15,000 in a single day [UNESCO.org].

Mode of Transmission

People can be infected from COVID-19 through close contact with people who have symptoms of the virus which includes sneezing and cough. However, Coronavirus are generally spread via airborne zoonotic droplets and its replicate in ciliated epithelium which caused cellular damage and infection at infection site. Cascella et al. [SARS-CoV-2, 2020] has been reported that the transmission of COVID-19 occurs through the spread of airborne respiratory droplets by sneezing or coughing. Different studies are also suggested that the close contact between individuals can also result in Coronavirus transmission [Holcombe, 2020]. It’s also indicates the possible transmission in closed spaces due to elevated aerosol concentration . This virus can be transmitted through sneezing and coughing without covering the mouth can disperse in the minute droplets into the air, through touching or shaking hand with infected person, making contact with a surface or object that has the virus and then touching the mouth, nose or eyes [UNESCO.org].

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled.

Area Of Study

The Taraba State University, Jalingo is located in Jalingo, the capital of Taraba State, Nigeria. Taraba State University is located in Jalingo, Taraba State Nigeria. The university at Jalingo was established by the Taraba State Government in 2008, to widen access to university education for Taraba State indigenes and promote economic development in the country. Right from inception, the university set out for itself a goal that is captured in its motto – Harnessing nature’s gift. The university is guided by the national and international manpower needs usually accredited by the National Universities Commission, Abuja.

Like other universities the world over, this institution strives to ensure that its products receive quality programmes. To this end, it had always subjected itself to the peer review of its programs. Curricula developed are of relevance to the nation as well as being up to date with modern academic trends. Council’s supervision in matters of finance and discipline of staff also ensure that this university is accountable to the university system.

The academic structure of the university consists of faculty-organized research units and relevant teaching and research support units. The department is the basic unit of academic organization aimed at enhancing interaction between related disciplines in the university. Though each unit of academic discipline is an organizational entity, they all have common teaching and research interests through the spirit of cooperative and interdisciplinary research and the development of group effort.

The administrative set up of a school is centered on the Dean’s Office, while the departments concentrate essentially on academic matters and pursuits. The overall affairs of the university are guided by the council in policy and financial matters, while the senate determines all academic matters.

The vice-chancellor is the chief executive of the university and supervises the academic and administrative operations of the university under the directive and /or advice of relevant committees. Such committees include the council and its committees, the senate and its committees, council/senate joint committees, faculty boards, administrative committees and other statutory committees.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

Data Presentation

The table below shows the summary of the survey. A sample of 388 was calculated for this study. Both online and off-line questionnaire distribution was made. A total of 258 responses were received, while a total of 230 were validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 230 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary

In this study, our focus was to investigate empirically into the knowledge, attitude, and compliance towards covid-19 prevention guidelines among students of taraba state university, jalingo.. The study specifically was aimed at determining the awareness of Covid-19 in Taraba State University, find out the knowledge of transmission, risk factors and symptoms awareness and as well examine the preventive measures against Covid-19 in Taraba State University.

The study adopted the survey research design and randomly enrolled participants in the study. A total of 230 responses were validated from the enrolled participants where all respondent are students and staff of Taraba State University. The findings revealed that the staff and students of Taraba State University are aware of the ways through which Covid-19 is transmitted, symptoms of Covid-19, what to do when they feel sick and the preventive measures against Covid-19.

Conclusion

Coronavirus disease spreads primarily through contact with an infected person when they cough or sneeze. It also spreads when a person touches a surface or object that has the virus on it, then touches their eyes, nose, or mouth.

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is be well informed about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based rub frequently and not touching your face.

The COVID-19 virus spreads primarily through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose when an infected person coughs or sneezes, so it’s important that you also practice respiratory etiquette (for example, by coughing into a flexed elbow). At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. The findings of this study derived from the tested hypothesis revealed that Taraba State University is fully aware of the causes and prevention of Covid-19.

Recommendation

Based on the responses obtained, the researcher proffers the following recommendations:

  1. Students and managements should endeavor to be updated with information on Covid-19.
  2. The management of schools should always provide the necessary equipment recommended in schools to aid prevent the spread of the virus such as, hand sanitizers, water and making sure that everyone that enters the school premises adheres to the rules of wearing their nose mask.
  3. The school should constantly carryout a sensitization programme to keep educating the students and staff as well as the community on the causes and prevention of Covid-19.
