OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

BROAD OBJECTIVES

To assess the knowledge, perception and utilisation of health information among other health professionals.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES ARE:

  1. To find out the perception of health professionals towards the concept of health information.
  2. To indicate how health information are been utilised in the management of patients care services.
  3. To explore the knowledge of other health professional about health information.

LITERATURE REVIEW

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this chapter is to look into the review of literature that have been written by different authors and people or group that are related to the project topic which based on knowledge, perception and utilization of health information.

CURRENT IN HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ELECTRONIC HEALTH RECORD

The electronic health record has been continuously expressed as an evolvement of health record keeping. Because it is electronic, this means of record keeping has been both supported and debated in the health professional community and within the public realm (Latour, & Maki 2010).

In the United state, 89% of those who responded to a recent wall street journal pool described themselves as “very/somewhat confident” in their health care provider who used electronic health respond positively about their providers who didn’t use electronic health records. As of 2008, more than fifty percent of Chief Information Officers polled listed that they wanted ambulatory electronic health records in order to have the health information record available to move across each stage of health care.

Health Information managers are charged with the protecting of patient privacy and are responsible for training their employees in the proper handling and usage of the confidential. Information entrusted to them with the rise of technology’s importance in health care, health information managers must remain competent with the use of Information.

Is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

CONCEPT OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

As health care grows more complicated with more specialist and a population, that is highly mobile, good health care information management becomes essential (Kari living store 2010). Health care information must remain accurate, complete and private.

Health Information Management is the practice of maintenance and care of health records by traditional and electronic means in hospital, physician’s office clinics, health department, health insurance companies, and other facilities that provide health care or maintenance of health records.

Health Information Management professional plant Information system, develop health policy and identify current and future information needs. In addition they apply the sciences of Information to the collection, storage, use and transmission of Information to meet the legal professional, ethical and administrative records keeping requirements of health care delivery, they work with clinical, epidemiological demographic, financial, reference and coded health care data.

Health Information Administrators have been described to “play a crucial role” in the delivery of health care in the United states, Nigeria and some other countries through their focus on the collecting, maintenance and use of quality data to support the information intensive and information reliant health care system (Latour, Maki, 2010). As the field grows and Information technology, become a more crucial part of the medical world, health information management is experiencing a transition from traditional managing practices with paper to more efficient electronic management, such as with electronic health records (EHRs), but the main goal is still to analyze, manage, and utilized the information sure the providers can access the information when necessary.

A large number of people have heard about the World Health Information Management and most of them hear about it from their colleagues, from the hospital, mass media, relative etc. still, little is known about the perception, knowledge and utilization patterns of health care providers and to my knowledge there are no published reports on the knowledge perception and utilization of health Information Management among other health professionals in Nigeria.

Some people know and believed that Health Information is all about issuing a card to the patient in the hospital or clinics while others know Health Information to be more than card issuer.

Edna Huffman 91972), stated that, the health record is an orderly report of the patient’s complaints, the diagnosis and treatment and to record result because “Doctor forgets records remember”. The record is of value to the patients, the hospital, and physician and for research, teaching, and planning.

In support of this, joint commission on accreditation of hospitals also posted that, the purpose of health record are to serve as a record planning care to provide a means of communication between the physician and other contributing to the patients treatment and other contributing to the patients treatments and to furnish documentary evidence of course of the patience and treatment during hospital admission (1980) said that health records are maintained for the following reasons:

  1. To enable physicians to give the proper and continuous care to patients. Care given directly to individual patient, the result of which may determine the treatment given subsequently to patients in the future.
  2. To be used as administrative planning instrument for the provision of adequate facilities.
  3. To furnish information which on analysis combined with comparative studying will improve the quality of hospital and other health care through the medical education and research.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

This chapter looks into the methods and procedure that were applied by the researcher in order to achieve research objective. It includes the research population sample and sampling techniques, the research instrument, data collection procedure and the method of data analysis.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The study is a descriptive survey that designed to determine and ascertain the knowledge, perception and utilisation of health information among other health professionals. A representative sample frame is drawn to select the sample to be used as respondents.

STUDY SETTING

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The University of Ilorin teaching belongs to the second generation of teaching hospital which was established by law on the 2nd of May 1980. It took off in July 1980 and started operation using as its temporary site, the then general hospital and maternity hospital Ilorin which were own by the Kwara State Government. The permanent site of the hospital was declared open by His Excellence, President OlusegunObasanjo in May 2007 while complete movement took place in April 2010.

The departments of the Hospital are:

  • Health Information
  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical laboratory

RESEARCH POPULATION

There are many University Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria but this study covers only one Teaching Hospital which is University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital Ilorin, Kwara State.

The target population are doctors, nurses, and other Health Professionals.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSIONS OF FINDINGS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter covers data presentation, analysis of data collected from the respondents and discussion of findings during the study and they are as follows:

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

INTRODUCTION

The chapter covers, Summary, Conclusion and Recommendation.

SUMMARY

This research work is based on the knowledge, perception and utilization of health information among other health professionals in University of Ilorin Teaching hospital, Ilorin Kwara State. The purpose is to assess the knowledge, perception and utilization of health information and to contribute to the existing knowledge of health information.

This history was reviewed under chapter one, concept and uses of health information were reviewed under literature review so as to have enough knowledge about health information management.

One hundred and fifty-three questionnaires were administered to one hundred and fifty0three subjects (other health professionals) and one hundred and thirty-five were collected back after they have completed its filing. The data was collected and analyzed based on the findings. The result revealed that the subjects have the knowledge of health information to be used as personal and impersonal and the study also reviewed that health information is contributing greatly to the effectiveness of the hospital.

Knowledge, perception and utilization of the other health professionals on health information shows that health information is contributing greatly to the care of the patient, and with the hope for better contributing to patient care.

CONCLUSION

Based on the researcher’s findings on the knowledge, perception and utilization of other health professionals on health information, the result of this study has shown the level of utilization of health information.

The findings show the effectiveness, knowledge, perception and utilization of health other health professionals on health information.

The findings have added to the knowledge of other health professionals concerning the uses of health information.

Some uses of health information are:

  • Teaching
  • Patient Medical Care
  • Administrative use
  • It protects the legal interest of patients, doctors and hospitals.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. Lectures about health information should be made compulsory to all other health and medical schools as an additional course.
  2. Health information department should try to organize interaction in the hospital concerning the department.
  3. Government should establish more school of health information.
  4. Electronic health record should be introduced to hospitals in Nigeria.

SUGGESTION FOR FURTHER STUDIES

  1. Researchers can find out the level of electronic health records in Nigeria.
  2. The researchers can find out about the utilization of health information in other states.
