Design and Implementation of Online Admission Screening System

CHAPTER ONE

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The objectives of this research work are stated below:

  • Study the existing system in order to get a full understanding of it.
  • Identify problems of the existing system.
  • Alleviate problems with the application process and record keeping.
  • Enhance the institution document management system.
  • Make the system easier to use for even students with less computer knowledge
  • Provide easy retrieval of student’s data.
  • Make the web contents lighter to enhance retrieval speed even on slow internet.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

University admission or college admission is the process through which students enter tertiary education at universities and colleges. Systems vary widely from country to country, and sometimes from institution to institution.

The issue of school admissions policy and practice in Nigeria is currently undergoingconsiderable scrutiny. This is prompted by identified weaknesses in the system and bythe perceived failure of the system to bring about reform and change in school profilesand in profiles of achievement seen asdesirable from differing perspectives.(Iwhiwhu, E.B. 2015)

In many countries, prospective university students apply for admission during their last year of high school or community college. In some countries, there are independent organizations or government agencies to centralize the administration of standardized admission exams and the processing of applications.

Student admissions are a vital partof any university’s running because students are what keep aUniversity alive. The student admission is one of the most important activities within a university asone cannot survive without students. A poor admissions system can mean fewer students beingadmitted into a university because of mistakes or an overly slow response time. The process begins with a potential student completing an application form through theUniversities and Colleges Admissions Service, the first step for students is to apply directly to theuniversity through a custom online form. The next step is for the Admissions service center has to review the application and ensure that allof the required information has been provided, from the form itself to thesupplementarydocumentation, such as language and degree certificates. If any of the required information ismissing, it is the secretary for the department to which the application concerns that contacts thepotential student and arranges for the delivery of the outstanding data. The application in its entirety is then forwarded, complete with a recommendation, to the respectivedepartment’s Admissions Tutor, who has the final say as to whether each potential student isaccepted or rejected. Before making a decision, the Admissions Tutor reviews the application andthe additional documentation, comparing the academic credentials to a list of university rankingsand previous, similar applications.

CHAPTER THREE

SYSTEM DESIGN AND ANALYSIS

SYSTEM ANALYSIS

System analysis is the act, process, or profession of studying an activity (as a procedure, a business, or a physiological function) typically by mathematical means in order to define its goals or purposes and to discover operations and procedures for accomplishing them most efficiently.  System analysis or study is an important phase of any system development process.

OVERVIEW OF EXISTING SYSTEM

Despite that some of the processes in the current system have been computerized, Careful analysis still shows that because of the several stages and decisions that needs to be made on the credentials of each student, the system mostly end up being like a manual system which has several limitations and lapses.

Below is a use case written to give a clearer picture of the existing admission system in Lagos State Polytechnic. Goals, sub-goals or intentions are expressed in every step of the basic flow or extensions. This practice makes the requirement specification clearer, and maximizes the flexibility of the design and implementations.

CHAPTER FOUR

IMPLEMENTATION AND DOCUMENTATION

IMPLEMENTATION

The online admission processing system was implement using phymyadmin, macromedia dream weaver, Mysql database and wamp server. System implementation follows the approval of the system proposals and its objective thus it is to arrive at a satisfactory, implemental, completed evaluated and function of the automated system.

The system implementation embodies the preparation of resources including equipment and personnel with the testing of the system.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION

SUMMARY

Admission is an integral part of every educational system and is beginning to play important roles in many other organizations that admit people for different purposes. Online admission processing is implemented and used for carrying out student admission processing, student’s online registration, and record management etc. Expert modelling is one of the most reliable emerging technologies as it is capable of performing human functions even at a faster rate without the fear of error. This can totally eradicate the fear of biased nature of human admission system.

This Computer-based system can be implemented to be used online or locally. In this case, it was developed to be used locally with MySQL, MyPhp Admin and Wamp server. The system database is updatable, reliable and secure and enables student’s applications to be processed and well documented.

RECOMMENDATIONS

I recommend this work to the management of Lagos State Polytechnic to ease them the stress they go through during admission processing. This will lead to the growth of the Polytechnic.

I also recommend this work to all institutions that admit students and organizations that deals with many employees.

CONCLUSION

The benefits of using the computer-based admission processing system cannot be over emphasized. This is because the system will increase the speed of admission processing, eliminate cases of missing admission documents as well as reduce the movement of student document from one office to the other.

This system is reliable, efficient, easy to use and fast enough to process large student applications.
