Conceptual frame work

Geography

Geography is one of the most important school subjects. It is no longer identified with mere study of features of a limited area, but with detailed study of the earth as the abode of men and his environment. Human element is the conception of geography and its teaching. The study of geography covers all the phenomena on the earth’s surface and explains the principle of day and night, seasons, climate, surface forms, flora and fauna, river, mountains, soil-erosion as well as distribution and development of varied human communities. But the densely populated Indo-Genetic valley is of much greater human interest than a description of an equal area beyond the Himalayas or in the deserts of Rajputana (Hamans, 2008). The human factor has now assumed much importance. Geography has thus ceased to be a mere collection of meaningless facts to be learnt by pupils. Geography has been variously defined as, “the description and explanation of the world’s landscape and a scientific description of inhabited landscape and their distribution over the globe.” Today, the knowledge of geography with all its accompanied methods and techniques is increasingly employed in solving many national problems all over the world. Geography has a utilitarian value. It can bring about a closer cooperation and better understanding among the nations of the world. Geographers whether engaged in teaching or in the research institutes, have 16 been making valuable contributions to the cause of the developing countries (Youvil, 2004). Of all school subjects, Geography is perhaps the best suited to bring about this understanding. It can show not only how peoples have lived and are living, but also what they have contributed to the common heritage of mankind. The most important of all, it can demonstrate that despite political divisions the inhabitants of the earth are becoming increasingly interdependent in their economic and cultural relations. It is a belief that Geography can make a meaningful contribution to the advancement of mutual understanding between peoples for better international relations. The 1950 International Geography Seminar organized by UNESCO was in recognition of this need. Geography is basically the study about real phenomena in human life. Geographical phenomena that exist around us are the product of all spatial interrelationships between physical and non-physical factors. In learning geographical phenomena, there are real patterns and abstract patterns. Abstract patterns are in the form of abstract understanding that is called concept.

CHAPTER THREE

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, we described the research procedure for this study. A research methodology is a research process adopted or employed to systematically and scientifically present the results of a study to the research audience viz. a vis, the study beneficiaries.

RESEARCH DESIGN

Research designs are perceived to be an overall strategy adopted by the researcher whereby different components of the study are integrated in a logical manner to effectively address a research problem. In this study, the researcher employed the survey research design. This is due to the nature of the study whereby the opinion and views of people are sampled. According to Singleton & Straits, (2009), Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using questionnaires with numerically rated items), qualitative research strategies (e.g., using open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to describe and explore human behaviour, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and psychological research.

POPULATION OF THE STUDY

According to Udoyen (2019), a study population is a group of elements or individuals as the case may be, who share similar characteristics. These similar features can include location, gender, age, sex or specific interest. The emphasis on study population is that it constitutes of individuals or elements that are homogeneous in description.

This study was carried to examine comparative effect of power point presentation and digital video school students’ instruction on secondary achievement in geography. Selected secondary in Dutse local government of Jigawa state form the population of the study.

CHAPTER FOUR

DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the analysis of data derived through the questionnaire and key informant interview administered on the respondents in the study area. The analysis and interpretation were derived from the findings of the study. The data analysis depicts the simple frequency and percentage of the respondents as well as interpretation of the information gathered. A total of eighty (80) questionnaires were administered to respondents of which only seventy-seven (77) were returned and validated. This was due to irregular, incomplete and inappropriate responses to some questionnaire. For this study a total of 77 was validated for the analysis.

CHAPTER FIVE

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Introduction

It is important to ascertain that the objective of this study was to ascertain comparative effect of power point presentation and digital video school students’ instruction on secondary achievement in geography. In the preceding chapter, the relevant data collected for this study were presented, critically analyzed and appropriate interpretation given. In this chapter, certain recommendations made which in the opinion of the researcher will be of benefits in addressing comparative effect of power point presentation and digital video school students’ instruction on secondary achievement in geography

Summary

This study was on comparative effect of power point presentation and digital video school students’ instruction on secondary achievement in geography. Three objectives were raised which included:  Find the comparative effect of power point presentations and digital video instructions on students achievement in Geography, ascertain the effects of power point presentations and digital video instruction on gender achievement in Geography and determine the interaction effects of modes of teaching and gender on the students’ achievement in Geography. A total of 77 responses were received and validated from the enrolled participants where all respondents were drawn from selected secondary schools in Dutse local government in Jigawa state. Hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistical tool (SPSS).

Conclusion

Based on the findings of the study, it concluded that: 1. Students performed better when taught with powerpoint presentation than when taught with digital video instruction. 2. Male students performed better than female students in geography when taught with either PowerPoint presentation or digital video instruction. 3. There is no significant difference in the mean scores of students taught using PowerPoint presentation and those taught using Digital Video Instruction in Geography 4. There is no significant difference in the mean scores of male and female students taught with PowerPoint presentation and those taught using Digital Video Instruction in Geography. 5. There is no significant interaction effect of modes of teaching and gender on students’ achievement in Geography.

Recommendation

Based on the findings and implications of this study, the following recommendation is made: Teachers should use powerpoint presentation, in which slides are properly structured and arranged with life shots of natural phenomena in teaching topics in geography to enhance students performance in the subject.
